I agree. At the level where it's show business the look and image is important. And I never saw the Who, the Stones, or the Beatles use a clip on.:)

Funny thing is I'm old enough that I actually saw all three of those groups. So when I started, all there was available was tuning forks and really expensive Peterson strobes that I'd only seen and used in studios. So I still have a strong appreciation for clip on's. I can understand people getting annoyed by clip on's but I'm not one of them.

we all do what gets the job done for our way of performing..its all good..it all works
it can all get..is it an orange?...no its a clementine....noooo...its a satsuma with things...i think if it works and you are happy with it...just keep doing it...no one watching/listening/dancing really is that bothered...only us...when i first started it was either pitch pipe/tuning fork(unless some bozo has used it to eat his fish n chips...ive seen that too) or an old harmonica...as long as it does wot it says on the tin...but i say concentrate on your act...performance before perfection.it is just a show..a song is only a couple of mins when all is said n done

another thing...there will always be someone trying to convince you that orange is really a grapefruit.
do what works for you and call it job done!..if we worried what people thought we would have different hobbies...show biz has enough knockers and doubters without us all turning on each other over our approach to our art form....da vinci used a brush
jackson pollock used his bike...tracey emin used her urine stained knickers..(sorry for that thought..its true though).all are considered art
a lot of us are just fed up because we cant get out and rock
so we look for something to obsess about...(that might be better as abcess...these things can fester if you let em....dont)

I couldn’t fathom the gist of this thread, I’m thinking ‘where else would you put tuners?’...................doh!

Why does the need to tune the guitar scream ‘novice?’ That would be more appropriate someone who didn’t, or coukdn’t, tune it!

The bassist and I used to look to the keyboard player. At least we’d know we were properly in tune, not just in tune with each other. He would continuously pulse each note and point up or down with his left index finger to indicate which way we needed to ‘go’. If he was grumpy he’d continually gesture with his middle finger instead.

How can clip-on tuners be "unprofessional", when I see all the "professionals" in all genres using them? How about playing footsie with a bunch of pedals all night, bending down to adjust them, etc.?.....never saw top-shelf guitarists do that either. Are pick holders attached to the guitar "unprofessional" too? How about amp heads that don't match their speaker cabinets? What about using floor monitors instead on in-ear devices?
Let's don't go down this slippery slope...

I use the Planet Waves NS MIcro tuners, and they fit under the headstocks, so you can barely see them. Just a little plastic clamp on top.
    I won't do a gig without one!
( you gotta zoom in to see the one on my SG, by low E string tuner/post)

    why would you unclip it?

i've been using headstock tuners for at least twelve years now.

For being so 'unprofessional,' I've been seeing more and more professional guitarists using clip on tuners during live performances over recent years.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    good man..lighten the mood
i think we all have to agree to disagree ...we all find our own ways of doing anything in life....were not machines...and weve had 2 wars for right to freedom i speech an choice
lets not make a mockery of that...its music...allegedly the free est form of expression there is...we cant let it become a dictatorship with jackbooted tunerpolice...
we need tuna police more...before they get fished out of existance

    Hi.

I was going to say you had me until the socks thing. Then I got to the end of the sentence and I realised it's okay. I always notice...
