Hi guys,

I'm building a Cabronita sort of thing and decided to follow the plans which had the headstock thickness at 13mm. Now when I was checking earlier my tuners don't tighten down that much, they'ed be fine in a 15mm headstock.

OK I can get some washers that would 'fill' them out but what I can't seem to find is some tuners that would fit on a 13mm headstock.

Are they called something ? Something I could lookup?

Many thanks,
Paj

The neck 'cos I know you like pics :)

Dumb question: are your plans calling for a 13mm headstock with or without an added veneer?

If it were me, I'd build to a standard thickness because of better tuner availability and strength.

No veneer no. I should pulled myself at the time. I think there's two choices,

1. Washers
2. Get the threaded insert on the grinder and lose 1 or 2 mm

I shall keep pondering. Of course I've already drilled the 10mm holes

I've seen tuner washers on Amazon and Ebay but they aren't easy to find. I build to 9/16" normally which seems to work well. I know that is close to 14mm but a little larger. I'm not big on following plans to that degree as I normally build non standard scale lengths and wood. YMMV but I massage such things to my needs not the other way around

When I built the double neck I thicknessed the heads (with veneers) to exactly 1/2 inch, which was the spec for the tuners that I intended to use. That was marginal, a couple of them were slightly loose. I considered adding a back strap but instead I added a second washer (purchased from LMII) and they are working fine. In the past I had always thicknessed to 9/16 but I thought I could go a bit thinner on these - it was a mistake to not have them in my hand and actually measure them (duh)

The Ed Hawley neck, which is my go-to tele neck drawing, specs out the tele peghead thickness at .580". That's what you should shoot for in metric if your Cabronita -like guitar has a F style peghead. I'd say your drawing is off.

His drawing can be found here as neck PDF.

I did the same thing once , a file was my best friend. :)

Hear! Hear! It's called "Tweeking! If you're like me and have never built "A Kit Guitar" you have to comprise and adapt a heck of a lot because not everything you need will be in front of you. No-one will ever know that those washers or screws or whatever are not genuine Fender or Gibson supplied.

Whip down to your local hardware shop and take a tuner with you and select what you need!!!

Since my design uses side mounted tuning machines , I need at least 3/4" headstock thickness to mount them . I really don't see what all the fuss is about .
