Traveling with some friends (musicians) and hope to hit some of the best music venues. I'm aware of Antone's and the Continental Club in Austin (got to see Redd Volkaert if we can), but really welcome advice and recommendations.
Restaurants and music shops too. I don't know much about San Antonio's music scene - so any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

For music stores in San Antonio I like Guitar Tex for their wonderful acoustic selection and terrific staff. Lark Guitars has some amazing high-end electrics to drool over and Spacetone is very cool, as well.

I just returned from my first trip to Austin... saw a small intimate show by one of my favorite musicians, and visited the Mecca... Austin Vintage Guitars.

I like Spacetone Music and Guitar Tex in San Antonio, and Austin has South Austin Music, Guitar Rez, and Austin Vintage Guitars.
There are countless great Mexican restaurants in both SA and Austin.
I like Jacala in SA, and Meson and Matt’s El Rancho in Austin.
The Saxon Pub (next door to South Austin Music) has three great shows (acts) every night.
The White Horse Saloon also features three acts every night, too.

For BBQ go try Valentina's in Austin. Dude knows his Teximexican BBQ.

Familiar, well worn but worth it.

Broken Spoke in Austin. If you have time Gruene Hall and Luckenbach.

Mi Tierra restaurant in San Antonio is a hoot, a real experience.

Get ready to have your mind blown. Killer players there if you know where to go. I’m sure you’ll get lots of of recommendations. Have fun in big T. Spend lots of money. Lol

Gotta try Tip Top Café too, not to far from Jacalas's both are great!
And while in Austin, try and see TDPRI's finest @brookdalebill at one of his shows!!

When I lived in SA, I used to go to this place called the Cove for music...played gigs there too. It was half wash-a-teria, half car wash, and half bar (with a stage)...or I guess that would be a third of each. Kinda weird combination, I know. That was 16 years ago, and I have no idea what it is like nowadays, but I see they are on the web at:
    https://thecove.us/

You could also check the local station KYSM to get an idea of the current local music scene and events in SA.

Not sure when in the spring you are going, but Fiesta is in April and has a ton of music events all over SA:

I've not spent much time in Austin, but if I were going I would check to see where these guys are playing:

Equidistant from SA and Austin you have Luckenbach, which was a cool day trip from SA.

If your gonna drive between Austin and SAN Antonio, definitely get off the main road and see small town hill country.
As already mentioned Gruene Hall and Luckenback....the music history in those joints will have the goosebumps up .....also a John T Floores outa San Antonio.
AND lots of hidden gem taverns and dance halls sprinkled thru the hills....
I honestly can’t get enough of Texas Hill Country....and the locals are amazing
