I watched episode one of "The Last of Us" on HBO last Sunday night. I read that its based on a video game. Anyway, it took a long time to get into the actual story. In the meantime we learned about characters we (I) liked and then they died. And then it turned into a sort-of cross between The Walking Dead and 28 Days Later. I'm kinda fed up with zombie shows right now, but the entire series is only 9 episodes so maybe I can stand it enough to see what happens.

Anyone else watching?

No. I saw what looked like a cool post-apocalyptic dystopian adventure. Then at the end of preview. There’s a giant exposed brain monster like this guy. That’s way over my line. And you see I have attached a pic from the 3rd rehash of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so you know ya gotta go really far to cross my line.

How much do they argue? I don't wanna watch another show about people arguing. Just shoot the damn zombie already.
The entire first episode set up for the idea of the (anti)hero taking a young girl across country because she is immune to the virus. I expect many Walking Dead type encounters ahead. I'm not sure I can handle it. I gave up on Walking Dead years ago.

Yeah, I watched it. I wasn't very impressed. The story makes no sense. The premise suggests that there was this zombie apocalypse in 2003. Of course, there wasn't. They then move to the year 2023, with the aftermath of the earlier events. It just isn't believable.

Watching.
Back in to say that I'm back in. I read a review of episode 2, which I had on but wasn't 'watching' that made me re-watch it, leading right into episode 3, which was, to me, as good an episode of regular TV that I've seen in a long time. The hotel manager from White Lotus season one was a guest star and I didn't even know it was the same actor. I'll be rewatching episode 3 as well.

I don't get HBO but I've been watching gamers on YouTube playing through "The Last of Us" about two years ago.
it surely is a very immersive top tier video game.
also "behind the scenes", "making of" and creating the music score.

let me know if HBO can touch that. I doubt it.

I too liked Ep 3. In fact, I believe this episode alone is award-worthy. A human story in a world becoming increasingly "inhuman". Recommend!

I just like the premise. The pandemic is the result of a mutated fungus, not a virus. Fungi are well known for their psychoactive properties (LSD, psilocybin) which could explain the crazy behavior of the infected. Having worked in emergent health care for over 30 years, systemic fungal infections always creeped me out. As much as viral and bacterial sepsis. The cordyceps fungus can’t live in human hosts, but it does thrive in ants and spiders with nightmarish results.

I think it’s great. It’s well written, well directed, and well acted. For once. There’s so much junk out there now.

Every episode is like one of the best episodes of the early Walking Dead so far, but with less zombie fighting. Which is fine. I can watch a George Romero if all I want is zombie fights.

The best episodes were about the human drama, and that’s what we have here.

Fungal zombies are still zombies.

The lead young actress is phenomenal in everything she’s in.

Best zombie movie ever is either Dawn of the Dead or Zombieland.

You heard it hear first .

Don't use a zippo when you have hand grenades, duh....
I don’t think they were incendiary. It may not have ignited with just high explosives and shrapnel, or just blown itself out right away. Real explosives aren’t gasoline fireballs like they are in the movies.

Still not sure how I feel about the fungal zombie concept, but I'm enjoying the show so far.

Agree with @middy, the acting has been very good.
