I've been asked to throw out the first pitch at a minor league game. I mean, how difficult can this be? I throw a tennis ball a lot further than that for my dog almost every day. I haven't thrown a baseball in 10 years but I should be able to get it to the catcher without too much effort. Any advice from experience?

    What could possibly go wrong?

I'd practice a bit before game day.

I've thrown many real ones, but never a ceremonial one ... That was in high school... Many years ago ...

Does pitching a loaf count? I was first at a new porta-potty at the beach last week! Really smelled great in there!

Might want to practice to make sure your aim is consistent. You don't have to blaze it across the plate, just get it there and in the catcher's mitt.

My brother did that once at a minor league game. He practiced before hand because he never played stick and ball sports and didn’t want to look like an idiot.

Probably worth throwing a couple at a local field, just to avoid that...

Start practicing now. Oh, and if you are old like me, warm up the pitching arm for a few minutes before you start throwing.

I had that happen to me! We took a boat to an island called Key Lois in the Florida Keys. They used to keep monkeys there for experiments. 100s running wild. One of the people we were with pulled out a square nab (you know the peanut butter cracker) and they rushed us. We jumped in the boat and it was aground. We all got out and started pushing. There were splashes landing all around us. One of lifes many lessons.

Back to the thread topic. Slip on a glove and toss a few. No reason to overthink things.

I was honored to be asked to throw out the first pitch at a SLU baseball game.
I walked out to the mound, threw it to the catcher, walked off
    Easy peasy.

I had a buddy who threw one at Safeco (T-Mobile). No one would think twice about it if you good-naturedly stood in front of the rubber and just lobbed one in. They're not there to see you. The only people who get booed are the ones who try to look badass and end up missing wildly.

I pitched back in high school as well for 3 seasons of American Legion baseball and have thrown the opening pitch once for the dedication of a little league field in my small village. My advice, remember it is a ceromonial throwing of the first ball and not pitching. I was actually nervous about it since it had been 20 years since my baseball days so I practiced pitching the night before. What goes wrong is that if you get too nervous, you will over-grip the ball and end up throwing it into the dirt or 20 feet to the left (if right handed). So, just toss the ball back and forth with someone in a game of playing catch prior to taking the mound. You will be relaxed and comfortable with the throwing motion....AND JUST TOSS IT rather than trying to get cute.

I'm surprised by how bad the basketball players were at this....and how the nun had a nasty

I’d probably fire it into the dirt six feet before the plate and throw my elbow outta whack in the process. I have faith you’ll do a lot better than that!
