Have you ever doffed your cap to a lady or someone else? I can't remember ever doffing my cap to anyone. Got any other weird words or expressions?

All this time I thought I was tipping my hat. Learn something every day.

If I’m wearing a cap, I’ll often doff it. It’s just good manners.

For some reason though, the expression reminds me of the time I showed up at a high-rise condo to install some blinds. I started to bring my stuff in, and the doorman rushed over to inform me that “the tradesman’s entrance is at the back.” Tradesman’s Entrance? What century is this, pal? I did not doff my cap to him, nor did I call him “guv’nor.”

Only if I am nursing a beer in the corner with my hat at a rakish tilt.

    I do it often.
    I wear a bald cap a lot.
I remove it when meeting a lady for the first time if I am being introduced.
It's still a cultural thing in rural Texas.

Yes, I have a few times. Always take it off for the National Anthem. Normally take off my hat indoors.

More of a fingertip off the edge of the brim kind of guy.

    Doffing a must if indoors.

If I see a funeral parade go by I do. Someone has passed on to the other side, these days I do it out of respect. I spent the last 5 - 6 years going to family funerals. My mum, dad, brother all were ripped away, so I feel that it's decent thing to do, as someone has lost someone close to them, or they may not have family left etc. Whatever, that life meant something to someone.

but yes, frequently. Remove completely when meeting a female, tip when meeting a male. Always remove for national anthem and prayers.

Quite often. Doffing should come back into our culture more.

Oh wait. That means showing respect will come back. Ehhhhh, that will never happen.:(:rolleyes:

I think "tipping" and "doffing" are two different things. If I am correct, tipping is not removing whereas doffing in removing your hat as a sign of courtesy or respect.

And a phrase I haven't heard for some time, “my hat's off to you (Sir, Madam, Ma'm)”.

Now that you mention it, we were working on a utility pole on the side of the road. A funeral procession was coming by and all of us, including those of us in the bucket, stopped working and removed out hardhats. We were doffing. It was a group doffing.
