Hats make older guitarists look cool and relevant. Except me.

I'm in my mid-30s, about 5 years ago I picked up a couple of fedoras to wear on stage. I have 5 now, and I never wear them on stage because it's not proper to wear them indoors. I always get compliments when I wear them around, I guess people aren't used to someone my age wearing hats like that. I like wearing them even more after reading all the haters on TDPRI.

You just have to find the right hat.
The reason that they make a thousand different styles and shapes is because people have a thousand different shapes to their heads.
I never wore a hat until my hair thinned out so much that my head would get sunburnt all the time.
It took a while, and I was self conscious at first, but I found what worked for me and bought several colors and different materials like felt and straw.
Now I don’t think anything of it, I’ve received many compliments and don’t feel self conscious at all.
Keep looking, the hat for you is out there you just have to find it.

My pointy head works with hats, I just never wear them. I think it's all about your face and head shape, which reflects your personality. Here in New Orleans hats are a big thing, and people wear them indoors and out. Some look cool, some look ok, and some look dorky. Most are in the middle category!

Just never, no matter what ANYONE says, never wear a beret.

I'm bald and should wear hats more, but baseball caps make me look like I'm hiding chemo (I'm not). Beanies are my outdoor headwear 6 months a year, but indoors are just too hot! Recently wore a flat cap onstage and I have to say I really liked it.

I'm in total agreement with you. I wear my hair shorter now (it was as long as yours but I've just gotten tired of taking care of it when I'm not feeling well) and my beard is long, short, long, short, etc. But a hat is a necessity!

I'm thinking a hat along with facial hair looks tough. Okay, I'm going to grow a beard tomorrow.

At 68, a ball cap. I have a number of Maui ball caps. I found a brown one last year that goes great with my leather jacket so now I have them for all seasons. I'm never without a hat outdoors. I'm bald and get cold in the winter and burned in the summer. Besides, it's me. My wife used to say not indoors but she's given up. Not at the table indoors is as far as I'll go.

I've worn a hat since teenager. Nowadays usually a black stetson-y suede one, sometimes even on stage. Wearing it the first time a colleague I've been working with closely for 10 years didn't even notice I'm wearing one... I guess it fits me :D

I don't know why brimmed hats aren't more popular here, as much as it rains.

I've never done well with most hats or caps, from buddies laughing at me or girlfriends telling me a ball cap "is not your best look". I started wearing the occasional newsboy style caps and got much better feedback though. Goes well with the flight jackets I sometimes wear. I also got older and don't care as much what people think, but compliments are still welcome.

"Hats "to look cool" always look dorky.
Hats "because it is you" can't help but be cool."

Couldn't have said it better. IMO though I've never seen anyone in life that doesn't look goofy ion anything but a ball cap. Fedoras, Aussie style hats, whatever that thing was that Dean Martin wore....just silly and pretentious. All mu opinion of course.

I don't look good in hats either. I want to wear them but every time I put one on it looks so lame and/or inauthentic.

I think the secret to this might be to choose a hat and wear it every day regardless of what anyone thinks or says. It will eventually become your look.

In my life, I've been through many attempted hats; all of them failed. Miserably.

I've gotten tired of supplying thrift stores with used hats, so no more hats for me.

The modern ball cap is not a good look for many people, they did away with wool and went to synthetics, stiffend up the from and now that ridiculous flat brim look has caught on..ugh.

Several companies make a soft 'retro' style cap in cloth, these are a much better choice on anyone over 30 unless you are at the tail end of a 30mil contract..
