Jimi played telecaster on Occassion. And gibsons. And a danelectro.

He’s a strong enough composer that the guitar doesn’t matter. You might not be able to do the whammy tricks. But you can still play the songs.
He didn't have the Dano anymore by the time he played with the Experience. He also played a Duo Sonic earlier.

The Gibsons he used for blues. He used a tele in the studio, but probably not live because it looks funny upside down. He also had a Jazzmaster.

Since I only play Nashville Teles these days, and I know quite a few Hendrix songs, I play them all on a Tele through a Boss GT-100, and it sounds fine. And I would guess in many cases, indistinguishable from a Strat.

Yup.

Bill Lawrence told me, based on what Jimi told him, he preferred the Strat (especially live) because of the limitations of the three way switch, the way it was traditionally wired. I don't think a player like Hendrix would be able to tolerate the guitar falling out of Position 1.5 on stage. If Bill had had more time to work with Jimi (as he had with Roy) I think Hendrix could have gotten over his misgivings about what Jimi saw as the sonic limitations of a stock 50's style Telecaster, by modding the switch to what most of us do today..

I only got to see the JHE one time, but my sense is that Jimi was not afraid of something looking funny. He could make a bad hair day seem cool.

I think a trem is integral to that "almost in pitch" sound that Hendrix achieved. Just as many of my favorite Neil Young songs work for me because Neil is just starting to apply pressure to the trem (or is just releasing it) in certain phrases. The extent to which the note is in tune, is depending on the picking hand, just as much as the fretting finger.

Does the average paying customer at the show, notice these things? I wish some did, but I doubt it.
