I spotted one that I need, but I'm somewhat leery of having to a bunch of fitting, sanding and drilling to get it playing.

Anyone have one?

Amazon sells a whole crapload of bodies ... which vendor is it?
I don't know, some kind of generic.

The reviews are all over with some saying its a perfect match and others saying its a routing nightmare with necks being shimmed because the pocket is cut too deep and bridge placement is off.

That generally comes with the territory, that is buying a pre-routed & drilled neck pocket. Shimming a neck pocket isn't the end of the world, there's just no way the manufacturer can predict the neck that any consumer is going to use & the mis-fit might even apply to the neck plate that is used for the bolt/screw holes for attaching the neck. Older Squier guitars have slightly different dimensions & taper from nut to heel for Bullet vs Affinity necks and the sloppy fit may mean the neck pocket might have side to side alignment in it that needs to be addressed as an issue. Even though the neck pocket dimensions might be perfect for length, width & depth ? Add in other brands for neck builds and the combination of manufacturing tolerances might be better or worse for fitment on a random replacement body from a random body & neck manufacturer. The only way to avoid that mismatch, buy a complete guitar that was properly aligned with a body & neck at the factory on the production line & completely assembled to be that relatively perfect fit & alignment. I've shimmed several guitars that were preowned & new, so even there, no guarantees it's going to be perfect. Just means that tightening the neck bolts/screws is an incremental hold and tightening sequence to ensure the alignment goes proper. I used to think a shim was a horribly bad thing, doesn't really bother me any more. I can align the neck and it plays fine. The saddles were designed to have adjustment screws fore & aft, up & down. Several of my favorite guitars have shims in the neck pocket, I just see them relatively as my personal Custom Shop guitars. For the new one's that are off, these are sub $ 100 guitars, I take more pride in knowing I have a player grade guitar that I made play better than the factory build & assemble. While the saddle screws may be for set up adjustments, they also can adjust & compensate for build issues.

I have a master luthier just across the river who builds custom Teles.

I'll call him tomorrow and see where gets his, or If he cuts them himself.

I bought a body from Jake at Ultratouch Guitars on eBay. He’s in TX. At the time, he was selling on Reverb, too, but he’s not there now. It’s a 3-piece alder I special ordered with only the neck pocket routed. The Squier neck I’m using for my build fits the pocket great.

It looks a little mottled in this pic because I’d wiped it down with some alcohol and it was almost dry. I’ve not started my build yet, still gathering parts.

I've built a few partscasters with bodies from eBay.
No fear there - CNC has leveled the playing field.
And a slab of wood is a slab of wood.
However, I'd pay attention to the reviews and if the seller got panned a lot ...

Yes. That is what this body was. About $75 at the time. Mine was ordered from eBay, but it is the same manufacturer in China. I probably left one of the reviews you read. All of the routs were incorrect. It seems they set the CNC to the proper depth PLUS the thickness of the cap.

Afterward I contacted them about the measurements and they said they could rout them to MY specifications at no extra charge.

The tiger maple veneer was extremely thin and I inadvertently sanded through it in a couple spots. All-on-all, the project turned out pretty nice despite the extra work. In fact, knowong what I know now, I would deal with the company again - but make sure to get the dimensions right! 😁
