So, I managed to pick up an old 71 Refin for about half what I would pay for an equivalent minty 71.

Negatives - Gloopy Black refin and CS Nocaster pup in neck, amp knobs.
Positives - resonance (even unplugged) and plugged in tone for days (which convinced me along with the price to ignore the negs)

What do you reckon - re-refin or leave as is?

Dealer pic with BK front pup, now replaced by Nocaster and pic after I had stripped it down and taken detailed pics (to follow):

I like black telecasters, so unless it's really rough and the gloop is making it difficult for the neck to fit to the body, I'd leave it for now and work on refretting that area of the neck. The actual finish you see outside of the pockets is fine, however? A little wear(or a lot!) gives a black tele a lot of character. Is the bridge pup stock?

The bridge pup has the beveled and raised G and D poles like my '62 AVRI pup, but the string around the pup is grey/black as opposed to white. That pup looks like it has been in thee a long time. Interesting!

The finish that is exposed looks fine to my eyes. I wonder if the goop in the neck route was put there as an attempted shielding?

Thanks for the comments and opinion, keep it coming and keep it qualified, thanks. The dealer has a good rep, but probably didn't strip it as I did, so I bought without stripping, confident that any probs would be resolvable.

Looks great in my opinion, just sort the frets out then you are sorted.

I had similar heart in mouth moment, but the neck numbering changed to a string of figures over period 69-73. :D so it has to be a 0 after the 7; the grain of the wood deceives the eye into thinking its a 9.

Can't say much about the finish as the photos aren't really clear enough but looks ok, tortoiseshell or black/white/black scratchplate looks great (I think!) on a black Tele. Frets done and a general tidy up, should be a good one.

I'd leave the finish. Sort out the frets.
Change the knobs unless you like them as is.

    Congrats.

"Every subsequent step away from original..."

    Words I've always lived by.

Meaning : It's up to you to stop the process. Just do the frets (if they are beyond filing of course).

A '79 neck would have the serial number under the logo on the headstock.
