At long last my main workroom is done and all the controllers wired up: Mac Studio M1 Max , X-Touch and Novation keys for the main rig. Ubiquitous KRok 6s, these seem to be the NS10s of our age

Outboards need wiring up to the patch bays and my beloved E-mu expanders need their rack ears fitted and eproms checked. Waiting for the Motu Midi express that will integrate the plug outs. Can't wait to have it all running, have a stack of loops, beats & remote guitar/bass parts to get done for various DJs, producers and publishers and the patience of my studio owning friends is running thin. Plus I have some Tele and Strat builds to finish.

Most excited by my Joemeek (UK version) VC6Q, described by my favourite engineers as the best ever DI boxes for guitar and bass... and he used to work for Motown (Mk. 2)

Peace,

A

Very nice!

It's always cool to see someone still rocking old E-mu kit. I have an E6400 Ultra and love E-mu's Z-plane filters and super flexible modulation system. That said, I don't use it anymore as it can't really hold a candle to modern software.

Wonderful setup - I am jealous!
But just to nit-pick, isn't that left monitor location going to unbalance the bass response of that speaker?
I have often read that a monitor should not be placed in a corner - maybe that is just for back-port speakers....

Howdy TT27....

I have had the same (KRK Rockit 8's...?) monitors for about 10 years.

I had your same thought....I don't care for that left one being in the corner at all.
If I were asked I'd suggest possibly switching the configuration of the desk and the rack unit.
I think it will play tricks on ones' ears and lead to inaccurate mixes.
Mine are placed about 3' from side walls and about 14" from the rear wall.

But...maybe front ported bass will negate my presumptuous concerns.

OP....very cool.
Clean, roomy look....which will probably not last that long. :)
Well done!

Carry on....

Yes, you have to deal with what you have... I have a smaller setup than you, with just a pair of small M-Audio monitors - and they are back ported! Such is the lack of space, that I also have to have one speaker in a corner! I try and offset the problem by pulling them a foot away from the walls and sticking a cushion behind each speaker, not great at all!! Fortunately I do 90% of my recording on headphones...

Mornin'....

I hear you amigo.

I've been through countless studio incarnations over the decades and also had to get by with less than ideal setups.
But....that doesn't stop us. :)

My room is 12x14 which is perfect for my work flow.

Have a great day....

Hmmm.

I'm thinking it's way WAY to clean. Get some coffee rings around the keyboard, and something sticky near the rear edge of the desk next to the rack. For a 70s/80s vibe, put some cigarettes out on the front right corner. I assume your big leather-ish chair that leans to one side and has a bunch of rips in the cover is off camera. And where's your lava lamp? I'm not sure if you're allowed to operate without a lava lamp.

I kid. I hope that was obvious. It's actually quite nice and feels like it would be fun to make some music there - though I agree on the space concerns. IMHO, "close enough" is sometimes just right if you're inspired to make the music you want to make. I just recommend finding another place to listen as well.

Hey folks thanks for the positive comments: I do have access to a dedicated mixing room locally that has high-end Adam & PMC monitors as well an SSL UFC/UFL DAW control setup. That said I don't do any live recording beyond any guide vocals for songs that session singers add remotely: Everything, even nylon string parts go in via various channel strips or a Pod go/Helix ( always done wet+ dry for re-amping as that's how most producers want remote session work).

I record regularly at Air Lyndhurst on session orchestral dates so also get check out what things sound like on their ridiculous custom Genelec soffit mounted systems, nice for orchestral tracking but clinical otherwise and the engineers have a supplementary set of PMCs(?) for mixing. I'm pleased that on the mixdown monitors, my last song sounded pretty good to everyone's ears including the engineering team so I'm not going down the rabbit hole of acoustics et al for what is mostly a writing room.

One of their engineers said simply attenuate the bass response on the left hand one , always check the mix somewhere else (which I do) and focus on your work flow not worrying about acoustics so I took his advice: My last two remote sessions also worked perfectly with no complaints from the customers on the final logic audio files.

I should add that I bought this lot ( except for outboards and synths) on the back of Sony Publishing buying 4 of my songs and giving me a 12 month deal with small advance so its song writing not achieving Rudy Van Gelder like recording prowess, that I'm interested in.

As I don't record final vocals or bands and never will, its the speed with which I can create a guitar/bass part/beat/song, then finish it and so far I have to say everything works like a dream, particularly the X-Touch: Its no SSL UF8 but its pretty close at a third of the $$

So happy recording , whatever you record and happy music making!

Peace,

A

Howdy....

Do you have any of these songs uploaded to a music hosting site?
You know, just that "inquiring minds want to know" thing. :)

Good luck with your music endeavors.

Carry on....

Once sold, they belong to Sony so absolutely not, similarly any new stuff goes to them first and if they reject it, its mine to do with as i want: I usually shop them first through DJ contacts, the interwub is the last resort and have never needed to use it as most of it is about sampling other folks stuff and making "new beats", don't want to spend my life chasing copyrights and my agent has some choice words to say about SoundCloud, YouTube et al that I can't repeat on a family friendly site...

Have thought about the beatmonger sites but I have plenty of direct DJ clients so again, haven't found the need.

The rack in particular looks great — and is that Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie-Woogie in your avatar?
