I wish I could join you! I don't celebrate Canada Day anymore. It happens to be the day my brother died in 1985, so the day is full of sad memories - but it sounds like you're going to have a good one. Enjoy!

Help us out here, you maple-syrup swilling, poutin-wolfing loyal subjects: as I read it, it's more the commemoration of the forced marriage of three pre-province colonies into a single, obedient colony, still under the crown. Plus, it took a Quebecois to change the name of the whole affair from Dominion Day to Canada Day.

Am I missing something? I mean, without artifice, many the time occurs, at least for me, to wish for the civility and just general niceness of our neighbors to the north...not to mention any number of other, IMO, more pleasant environments and such. On that basis alone, I salute Canada Day and all our excellent Canadian colleagues that actually make my day better with your wonderful sense of humour...

    Happy Canada Day!

Mrs. 79 and I just spent a couple days up in the Great White North (maybe half an hour outside of Barrie). Everything but the traffic was great. Good food, good people, good beer, and good music.

Happy Canada Day to you! Been north of the border once and had a great time at a concert. I know Pearl Jam was there and two other big name groups too. Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden I think. That was in the 90s. Some day I'd like to visit again.

I was on the lake yesterday. Today, I'm BBQin up some eggplant for baba ganoush and I'll be downtown in time for fireworks over the lake.

    Doesn't seem too rowdy.

Pretty much. Even the way we left Britain was quite civil.

"Say, Your Majesty. Do you mind if we form our own country?"
"Hmm, that sounds like a grand idea. Be my guest. Oh and take that bothersome Northwest Territories off our hands, would you?
"Happy to do it, Your Highness. Happy to do it. Be sure to come and visit every twenty years or so."

I didn’t look it up but what is the significance of the 24th of May in Canada?

I immediately thought of this when it was mentioned about watching the fireworks display by the lake.

Victoria Day. Canada's favourite queen. Even the UK doesn't commemorate her the way Canada does.

    Happy Canada Day all!

I was conceived in a foreign country called Newfoundland. Two months after I was conceived, 01 April 1949, my older sister, parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and great-grandparents became Canadians because that's when Newfoundland became a part of Canada. I was born seven months later (October, 1949). I was the first member of my family to be born in Canada.
