Just saw it on twitter... would've been his 63rd. Man, what a lifetime of great guitar we missed out on.

    RIP D!

What a loss! I can't begin to imagine where the Minutemen would have gone had D.Boon not died. I guess fIREHOSE gives us some vague idea, but it's clearly not the same. Going to listen to Double Nickels on the Dime tonight and pour one out for D.

I've listened to this album many times since I first got it about 20 years ago, and only a month or two ago did the title finally make sense to me.

    Happy birthday D!

It's a real head slapping moment of discovery since it's all right there on the album cover! Back in the day I just thought it sounded cool as hell.

Highly recommend this doc for fans (or just interested folks) if you haven't seen it already.

Looks like this is the whole film:

The world could have used a lot more of this man's guitar and words.

I actually was playing What makes a man start fires today? What a completely sad loss he was. An amazing guitarist and lyricist.

Miss you, Dennes. Was fortunate enough to meet him and Mike and George a number of times and share some bills. Genuinely one of the best people I've known in my life.
Minutemen in my office, every day, every meeting, every video call, that's what's up:

My collage has 9 albums that impacted me, Damaged (first import RoadRunner pressing!), Bowie, it’s not all a consistent genre. But when I was growing up I was playing a lot of punk, post punk but very much dialed into the hardcore scene as a spectator. Usually the most “rock” band on the bill and the least like what most people think of. I’m not sure I could describe Minutemen except DIY. Germs is a long and not happy story. But Threat, that’s similar to the Minutemen in the way they played what they felt and never really bowed to anyone. Different styles but definitely similar mindsets.

Highly recommend Desolation Center if you haven’t already seen it. Some of the Watt interviews, it’s as hard for him now as it was 20 years ago.

Just wow. As a little skater/poseur, I used to scrawl their name on my notebooks (like the other cool 9th graders) before I had truly heard much of their stuff. Just a bit too young or stupid to get it anyway. Then I *heard* it in my late 20s and it was a whole thing for a long while. Sad I didn't get it when he was still around. Truly singular.

There's a quote from this movie that I always keep near me: "It’s so funny when people talk about the ‘good old days’ you know, because in a lot of ways they were lame ass. The people who made music and were in bands were in a whole other world far from you. You couldn’t have that…we were more kept in our place. Nowadays you’re kept in your place more by your mind, more by the herd mentality, than actually having the material and wherewithal to do things.”

“Part of who he was is a part of me now”.

I discovered Double Nickels about 15 years after it came out, and I was obsessed with it. It was one of those records that I would give copies to people because they had to hear what I heard in it. They usually didn’t, but the ones who did...

Rest In Power D. I never thought a song, of millions, could be somewhere obviously in a “Top 10”-of-life-situation, but this one is definitely one of them.

I've had the same surprise. I've turned people onto Double Nickels and just nothing. They just didn't hear it. I even had one person say they were f***** communists :). Anyway, that's actually been a good thing. For a long time I was certain that everybody else would like what I like. I finally realized one day that, well, they just didn't. That was a valuable realization for me.
