I have a couple of Hercules hanging guitar stands I've been using for a few years and recently realized they were messing up the finish on my guitars. Mostly just some black marks on the headstocks where they hang, but also dulled the finish on the back of a guitar with a shellac finish and another with an unknown finish (I think thin spray poly or wipe-on poly). This was from the padded rest they lean against while hanging by the headstock.

Irked, but thankful I caught it now. Most of my guitars aren't show queens anyway, but what gives with that? I'm tempted to write to Hercules and point this out to them. Not so much to complain, but now I have to get rid of my stands and get something else.

I stopped using the rest-on-the-base stands after my Gibson acoustic tottered and fell out of one and took a nasty fall. Why is it so hard to find a decent, functional guitar stand?

    Anyone else experience this?

Anyone know of some hanging stands that DON'T do this?

    i'd appreciate the tip...

The foam rubber they use is pretty caustic to finishes. I bought cloth gaffers tape and put it on all my stands, problem solved.

I'm surprised to hear this of Hercules. The floor stands are very good.

I would be interested to hear their response if you contacted them.

Hercules have never affected my poly or nitro guitars, but I don't have any with Shellac.

I’m sorry, what gives you the impression that gaffer’s tape is non-reactive with guitar finish?

Something weird is afoot if the stand is reacting to multiple finish types. Especially Hercules who touts their stands as non-reactive.

Gibson seems to have the biggest problem with stands reacting to nitro. Any the solution is cover the hanging part with 100% cotton some use socks or cloth which look pretty tacky. I bought 100% cotton twill tape and wrapped all my (9) hanging hangers and it has worked perfectly for almost a year with no nitro finish reactions.

Mine are nitro, poly, Tru-Oil and shellac. Weirdly, my Gibson with nitro hasn't really reacted with them...but it hasn't spent as much time in them either. Honestly, I'm flummoxed. I figured these were a pretty safe bet.

I make an all wood wall hanger for a little classier look that I have used on my nitro guitars for years. I use all natural soft suede for the padding for nitro safe contact.

Unfortunately all the pic are uploading sideways.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
