Thank you all so very kindly for answering all these questions. I will review all lyrics before singing them in public. However, all this discussion has sparked even more questions.
IBOBUNOT - Your picture really worried about the whole "Devil with a blue dress" thing.... and what happened right after the picture was taken?
Everyone Else - exactly where does a feller buy a stairway to heaven?

Sloopy: Never did find out what her daddy do, er, done, er, did done do... but I always dug the original R&B version by the Vibrations much more than the McCoys' cover. Vibrations' was dripping with funk.

    Anyway.

What was Bob Marley talking about: "Pokey like Jammies, too?" Pajamas?

and while we're on that general subject, in the song "Puff the Magic Dragon", is it or is it not a coincidence that the little boy's last name is "Paper"?

Wow! So glad to see they're giving credit to Vernon Green for coining the phrase - or, at least, a variation of it, 20 years earlier. I listened to "The Letter" by Green and the Medallions hundreds of times and never could figure out what the word was. Then Steve Miller did "The Joker," and I thought, "Close, but not quite the same." Still, Green must have wondered how he could have been pre-empted like that. "The Joker" also had the lines, "You're the cutest thing that I ever did see; really love your peaches, gonna shake your tree." I'm guessing most people were unaware of the 50s R&B hit "Lovey Dovey," by the Clovers. (Or the Buddy Knox pop cover in the early 60s.) Had those very lines in it. Steve Miller's genius was working them into a song that was flat-out great; he made the words his own.

What about the creepy lyrics in a tune called Timothy..

it was a poppy tune about some kids trapped in a cave and we as young kids ourselves believed that they ATE their friend...
pretty hard to believe this got on the radio back then !!

    attitude is all we control

ha hoo hoo. this thread and this post are good uns. been several years since i stopped by tdpri, how did i live without it? and then o see your post photo again Gary, a face that can not be forgotten.... it all comes rushing back...

anyway, on this topic, Victor Frankl - concentration camp survivor and psychologist, a must read - says that our attitude is all that we really control. all the rest is beyond us. tho i must wonder if Frankl was familiar with the volume pot on an electric guitar?

and then there is the Who line "new boss, same as the old boss" which is both on topic but needs no further explanation...

The Who - "My Wife" - "gonna buy a fast car, put on my lead boots and take a long drive"

    Or:

You do the Hokey Pokey you turn yourself around, that's what it's all about!

Now, lets just suppose for the moment that, "the hokey pokey" is what it's all about. The greatest mysteries in life and yet, you do the hokey pokey, that's what it's all about.
