Oh, there certainly was 5th Beatle. #5 shows up in 1966 and is called "the studio". That's my take on it.

The Beatles quit live performance in ‘66 because “we couldn’t hear ourselves”.

The Stones were the first big touring act to solve that with their professional sound system (including monitors) for their 1969 tour.

And still - they quit ! 😭😭😭🙄

It ain't a popular opinion, but they sucked...
Opinions do not establish fact. Opinions are not necessarily fact…..or even factually based. They are personal reactions and thoughts. We may all think what we want. That establishes nothing beyond the personal opinion holder’s thoughts.
I personally am of the opinion that is not in agreement with yours. It would seem from the professional association with the other people who comprised The Traveling Wilburys that there were four well-established and well-respected musicians who disagree with your opinion, also.
I can accept that you think that Lynne ‘sucks’, but it does not follow that your opinion makes one bit of difference in the reality that exists.
From a critical point of view, personal reaction to an artist’s endeavors is not relevant. What is relevant from a critical analysis is what an artist accomplishes with regard to that artist’s intent.
anyway…musical interlude for anyone who might enjoy what Lynne did…

I do not like a lot of sounds that Jeff Lynne makes when he is leading a band. (Catchy tunes ? Undeniable)*

I do not like how reliant his sound/career is on his interpretation of the whole Beatles oeuvre.

Is he a total pro ?

Pretty self-evident . Has he worked with a lot of the greats ? Of course.

On the other hand both he and Rick Rubin (an admitted non-musician) produced enormous Tom Petty records .

I far prefer Wildflowers (Rubin) to Full Moon Fever (Lynne).

My preference only.

That kids, is how you state opinions.(Wally did point that out too)

I am so Fabulous !

I wish there were three more of me , then we could be The…🤔

*also admit, a laaaaarrrrrge portion of ELO’s catalog was played ad nauseam daily on at least two classic rock stations in my town growing up, so repetition could also be at play here. Evil Woman ? Rather jump out of a moving car…

Well, you know what they say , “Brevity is the soul of wit!” 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄😫🤣

Of course if Jeff Lynne said it, he’d need 64 tracks, innumerable overdubs, everything recorded separately - and a string section !

Well, George Martin did not have 64 tracks in the 1960s. Had he had that equipment, rest assured that he would have used it to the fullest extent. And….iirc, there are strings added to quite a bit of Beatles’ music. Martin used every trick he knew. He recorded some of his classically influenced piano tracks at half speed because he could not play what he had worked up to enhance the music of The Beatles at the tempo at which those songs were intended to be played. When sped up 100%, they fit the tempo and were an octave above what he actually played.
At any rate, serious critiques as I understand and appreciate it, are not a forum for personal thoughts but rather should deal the material’s intent and how well that intention was fulfilled. I have never purchased ELO music, but I do understand that Lynne is a professional with a degree of musical ability, production skills, and as I stated a certain degree of respect from his contemporaries in the music industry.
George Martin had his ‘moments‘, too….
