The salesman in the music store which I shopped most often called those Gibson Recorder. He said it was designed for studio work. I remember they were pricey and a little ugly. As I recall they also weighed a ton.

Weren't the pickups the ones Les Paul actually preferred?

This guitar had a few things Les Paul preferred
- low impedance pickups ( still humbuckers)
- a flat vs. curved top
- some on board effects, and maybe out of phase switch
My first electric was a 1976 Les Pauls Signature ( not a big seller, cheap!) that had similar electronics, that wide 'harmonica' Nashville bridge; but the body construction was semi-hollow, like a weird 335.

Definitely was known as "Recording Model" back in the day. Heavy as heck according to reports.

Given the choice I'd choose the over-blinged LP Custom, but the Recording Model would be fun to show up with at a practice and make the bandstare.

The Marauder had a brief run, thanks to KISS.
That was actually my first "real" guitar (not because of KISS) - blonde with a white pickguard. Nostalgic me started looking around for one a few years back, and holey schnikeys, people were (and still are) asking quite the chunk of change for them. As in, $1500 and up.

The V went on to become a little more successful, but at the time was considered a failure, along with the Explorer. All 3 models introduced in 1958.
