guitar switch or amp setting for these two distinct sounds?

    first guitar chords I'm hearing a muffled sound, is this done with a particular switch on a Gibson? Apparently that's a guy named Danny Whitten playing lead,

    It sounds very compressed, so a compressor would likely do it. Or an OD with a lot of compression. Bridge pickup. Or on a Strat, switch position 2 could get close.
