Just started a new job that has me getting home between 9pm and 10pm. Considering switching my practice to before bed. Do any of you do this already? Any pros and cons you've noticed? Thanks

Just my opinion, but practice is like exercise - best done and most productive when you aren't tired.

Sometimes I use practice to fall asleep, in the middle of the night when I wake up at 3 AM! But I do believe it helps make me tired when I practice. Mostly boring stuff like scales arpeggios etc…

It’s a great wind down but Ron R is dead on.

Maybe do a split schedule practice?

The best practice schedule I ever had was when I worked noon to 8. I never slept in but made myself get up so I could practice while fresh. I would usually work on something not too difficult at bedtime to wind down

When I'm trying to learn something, I like to practice it right before I go to bed and then immediately when I wake up. I mentioned this to someone once who said that the brain processes muscle memory when we sleep. Makes sense to me.

The only time I can play is from 8:00PM to 10:00PM. Too busy with life and work at other times except for occasionally playing on the weekend afternoons.

Worked nights my whole adult life.

There’s no cure for what it does to your body and mind.

But music couldn’t hurt if your living situation permits.

This is gonna pretty much be me when my daughter goes back to school. I am sleeping in the spare room as my wife gets up for work at 4:30 am.

I couldn't imagine. I'm an animated player and it winds me up.

I tend to come home wound up, just hoping playing doesn't wind me up more. Lol

    Yep!

    My opinion about working nights?

For every year you spend working nights you age a year-and-a-half.

I can’t play right before bed. Mentally stimulating even when you’re playing in a relaxing style. I wouldn’t do it. Might mess with your sleep. I say this as a sufferer of chronic and debilitating insomnia.

I like playing before bed. Gets my mind thinking about something other than work.

Whenever I can't sleep, I practice arpeggios, around the circle of fifths. Puts me out light a light.

I know that my early morning practices are way, way more productive and focused than my evening ones.

I don't call it practice anymore. It's therapy.

I'd suggest doing whatever you find most relaxing when you get in from work. My last job was fairly physical and would be rushing around until I finished at 00:30 AM. I would get home at 1 AM and would be wide awake as if it were the middle of the day and couldn't drop off until past 3 AM.

Since my “practice” is my enjoyment it doesn’t matter when I play. I do often end my evening playing for an hour.

You get home too late. My practice time starts at 8. :D I sit with a cappuccino on top of the amp and play for half an hour to an hour. I take care of the dogs at 11 and any odds and ends that need to be done and I’m ready for lights out at midnight. Can you do lights out at 1? I’m 71. That’s an hour too late for me.
