So it is the Memorial day sale - 15% off. I need a new audio interface device so I thought - wow nice timing. I put the Focusrite 2i4 in my cart - 199.99 - enter the discount code and ...

    Nothing.

Ok, it does say it doesn't apply but I could contact GC for a deal.

    So I do.

I explain the circumstances and the GC rep says they will make me a deal.

I say: Ok, what is the deal.

They say, Well we can send the deal price to you via email.

I say great send it over.

And the deal they email is to buy the unit at 199.99.

    What?

I contact them and say, I don't really think that is a deal. They say the deal was supposed to be 189.99.

    I said, I don't think so.

They say: hey I got you 15% off.

I said 189.99 is not 15% off. Can you send me the email with the 15% off price?

They say sure and send me an email with a price of, you guessed it, 199.99.

    Seriously!

Then I say to myself. I like dealing with Sweetwater. Let me try them.

I contact Sweetwater, explain the situation and ask if they will match.

    Sweetwater says: sure.

I call and place my order at Sweetwater.

    Yikes.

That is really weird, all they would have had to do is pull it up in the online system "SPO" and have a manager apply the discount. I've never sent an email with updated pricing?

You sure Focusrite was not on the "list of brands excluded from the 15% off sale"?

It was a LONG list. I got that flyer yesterday in the mail, I had to take a photo with my phone and zoom in to read the fine print they squeezed so much in.

I'm pretty sure it excluded all items that were > $199 that were not a GC "house brand".

D'addario was not excluded, but I think that's cause they might not sell anything that expensive at GC, and the coupon was only good for a single item, so you couldn't buy 5 X 10-packs of strings or something.

It was about the lamest sale fine print I've seen.

GC seems to be in the business of shooting themselves in the foot.
The folks at the Counter try but, they are hampered every time by the Computers they work for.

It was on the list of excluded - but they will almost always give you the deal if you call them or chat with them. They were the ones that told me they would give me a deal on that item.

I once bought a printer from a chain store, I forget which. I had been looking online and saw a model on sale. When I got to the brick'n'mortar store the printer was there but it was not on sale. I asked them if they would match what was online and they did, but hey, they are matching *their* own price. I had to point that out to them.

I've never had an issue getting a discount from Guitar Center. However, I did have a Sweetwater rep insult me before offering me a discount to match a competitor. I have chosen not to purchase anything else from Sweetwater. There's nothing special about any of the large retailers. They all play their game to keep the MAP facade to Fender, Gibson et al regarding discounts.

Funny you say that. I just saw that my local GC has the Blackstar ID:Core 40 in stock for $199. I ask -- is this the V2 or the superseded version. I get back an email saying "If you want the V2, we can order that." I reply "If you can offer a substantial discount on the DISCONTINUED model, I'd be interested.

    No reply...

Ya gotta read the humongous exclusion list on every GC coupon, but nevertheless, if you call Sweetwater, they have matched the deal every time. Ironically, I have even called MF and they have matched the deal too.

Thank you GC for being stupid.

I had an email exchange with one of the store managers of my local GC about this very subject. He told me they have to publish that exclusion list or the manufacturer's will get on them. He says if you call or go into the store with the coupon they can usually give you the discount. Not ideal I know, but just thought it might be helpful to someone.

I love Guitar Denter! I get to go in and try stuff out for free, always there when I need something right now, 30 day money back guarantee, decent prices on used stuff, and will always buy my used stuff when nobody wants it on Craigslist. I make about half of my purchases there.

Guitar center as a company, meh, whatever. My local guitar center is great though. I know the managers and I always get fantastic service. I also take lessons, so that's a 10% discount on basically everything. Theoretically the discount is only supposed to count once for each item on your "checklist" but they just give you a new coupon whenever you need it.

You guys. You need to come to Australia where the shops are about 1/2 the size, have 1/4 of the product and are priced twice as much. ;)

(I love my local shop, though)
