Anyone care to explain this to me?

Hardly any Guitars, no tube amps, no basses, plenty of drums and DJ stuff and a whole lot of "lifestyle" articles.

Lot of "alternative lifestyle" stuff. Not sure what they hope to accomplish. I'd prefer they concentrate on the music.

Have guitar sales gone off the cliff maybe? Then again maybe they’d want to be moving surplus stock if that was the case.

Never having been to a GC how heavily do they promote the lifestyle stuff in store?

    Cheers,
    Geoff

    .

If you walk into a supermarket you can measure which products they are making the biggest profit on by the square feet of floor space allocated to them. Chips fill a whole aisle both sides. Same with a music store and a music store's catalog. They must be selling a lot more lifestyle and DJ equipment these days. What's the profit margin on 'lifestyle'?

I was pissed off today as I had to go to 2 Guitar Centers, to find the Martin strings I really like....
( side: go figure, After 35 years of not liking Martin strings, they make a line that feel and sound great on my Martin- I've been getting them online)
...So when I got to 2nd GC, I kind of bitched about the first GC ( twice in a month) not having strings ( I'm an Uber driver, so all over)

But then I kept ranting ( don't know why, it just came out, I think employees thought I was crazy), and said stuff like
" Guitar Center is the worst thing that ever happened to the NoVa area music stores ...you put everyone out of business!" Then I named 5-6 stores I used to love.
Every get that feeling where you know you should stop, but you keep going?

I imagine 'lifestyle accessories' means T-shirts, caps, etc.

As far as guitar sales go, particularly as holiday gift-giving goes, guitars are waaaay too personal to be picking one out for someone else. My wife figured out long before we got married that things like axes were never gonna be 'quite right' unless I picked it out. So she buys me pretty straps, and Marshall T-shirts and lifestyle accessories.

I don’t need to be sold on guitars, pedals and amps...I already have a list burning a hole in my wallet.

It was a lovely, glossy tome printed on expensive paper that sold me on absolutely nothing, including the one-sheeters on alt-lifestyle stuff. It was a 3/8" pile of fluff. I don't really get it.

The GC closest to my house is a musicians store. Not much lifestyle anything. But the one over in Orange about 9 miles away has shirts and hats and a Lifestyle area. Haven't received my holiday catalog yet.

When i mentioned "lifestyle", I wasn't talking about t-shirts and coozies, I was talking about actual "lifestyle" articles, felt like I was reading Oprah's magazine or Vanity Fair...

That's not what I was talking about at all.

It's page after page of this kind of stuff.

    Interesting read.

    What’s the problem?

I don’t page through catalogs though, so maybe I’m not the target audience.

I find those kinds of articles refreshing compared to the crotchety old rocker articles or the Yngwie gear rundown type articles. I'm biased toward wanting more women in music, though. I also think it's a smart marketing move if you're in the music industry. Makes sense to expand your market.
