Would 2 inches make for a thick enough guitar body? I plan on using a Squire 51 bridge. Also how thick should the neck pocket be? Thank you TDPRI.

Normal body thickness is 1 7/8", although there are some Asian guitars such as the Squier Classic Vibe DuoSonic that are only 1 1/2" (and nice and light!). Fender neck pockets are generally 5/8" deep.

Well .......... according to this Fender blueprint on which the Terry Downs Telecaster drawing is based, the body thickness is 1.75 in. plus or minus 0.010 in.

Jack, I was surprised at the Made in Mexico '50s Esquire ( a really well made. good sounding guitar) being thicker than a US Tele - any ideas about that? Maybe that extra thickness makes it sound so good...

Pardon me for jumping in, but what kind of tonal characteristics are likely to change if the body was 2" thick?

Your shoulder would get sore faster and you would likely end up moaning and groaning at a slightly different pitch than normal.

I've got a homemade tele that is 1.5 inches thick compared to the standard 1.75, and it feels a little on the thin side. Its somewhat more comfortable because of the slab-style body, but most tele players while looking at it could notice something wrong.

I think two inches would be a little on the thick side. I'd consider putting in a hip plane like on a strat because 1.75 is perfect and two is probably gonna feel like a giant piece of wood in front of you.

I'm just starting my first build -- I've got a 1.5" thick blank I was considering using, but I see on the Terry Downs blueprint that the switch cavity is listed at 1.5" deep. What control plate/pot/switch setup did you use for your homemade tele, and how deep did you rout the cavity?

Much appreciated!

Standard tele electronics will fit in 1 3/8" cavity. You can even route a shallower cavity, if you use a PCB switch instead of a paddle switch.
