Everybody got all excited about the Grote guitars on Amazon, and I misunderstood and went out and bought a grotty guitar. Not sure why, it just seemed like a good idea at the time. $100, which is probably all the money in the world for this thing, but I can’t see how I can go horribly wrong at that price. 2004 Squier Bullet Special. I don’t know exactly what colour that is, but I like it. Anybody know where to find the code in the serial? It was obviously owned by someone who owned a guitar stand, but never ever washed their hands. Also, the pickguard must have had stickers all over it, and the pawn shop didn’t waste much Goo Gone cleaning them off. It took me a shocking amount to finish the job. The fretboard needed scrubbing, as well. One set screw on the bridge has been replaced by a 1” machine screw (don’t I still have a strat bridge around here somewhere?), but there isn’t a scratch or chip anywhere on the neck or body. Now that it’s clean, it looks kind of awesome IMO.

    I like that design;

    Single humbucker, single Volume Knob.

    Good stuff.

    :)

Actually, I was trying to find something to clean it with when I got home, and I looked at a canister of disinfectant wipes. “Hmmm...” I sez, “I wonder if those are OK to use on a guitar?” Then I remembered what guitar I was talking about and started wiping like there was no tomorrow. I killed 99% of the viruses!!

Honestly, though, I still can’t believe how unscratched the finish is; I know poly is tough, but the way people treat these cheap guitars is usually pretty brutal. And I kind of like the black pickguard. I am assuming I will not like the pickup, but the world is my oyster as long as it turns out to play OK.

For the record, it is apparently Ice Blue Metallic. From the name, I would have thought Ice Blue would be lighter, but who cares. I like it. A Ford colour, apparently.

Neck is a bit narrower than I like (1 5/8” at the nut), but then again, so is my Danelectro. Also, I probably should have put this in the Strat forum, but it never occurred to me, because I didn’t think I would own a Strat.

Side note: I cannot believe I do not have any strings. Seriously? I buy them by the three pack, and I only have two electrics. I never don’t have a spare set.

Looks cool, i'm guessing they changed out the pickguard for that black one with single humbucker. The saddles might be new too? I would pull that guard off and see what that pickup is. Might be a fancy brand name one like EVH.

Very cool. It's like the Tom DeLonge signature Fender did a few years back. I still keep an eye out for one of those.

No, the Special was a single HB (ceramic, no real consensus on goodness/badness), single volume Bullet made for 5 years. Of course, I didn’t know that until I saw it in the window and checked the inter webs...

For some reason I love single pickup strat the most of any strat. It just plays against type to have a single HB hardtail strat, how can you go wrong?

    I have one of these.

    6CB3DE45-B1C7-4FC1-BD99-122737295A62.jpeg

    Swap meet. 40 bucks.

Added fresh tuners, bone nut, GFS humbucker, and a tone control.

    It’s a badass little guitar

$40 bucks US? So about the same price. :D

Yeah, I’m not sure about the no tone control thing. I’ll play with it for a while and see. What pickup did you put in it?

I don’t think I’ve been in one for over a decade. Not sure why I stopped in today. Must have smelled GAS.

It’s some extra hot GFS model...I think it’s their “EVH” one.

I also added a push/pull coil split on the tone control.

...and yes, the body is in fact plywood.

Yeah, I have a push/pull pot, so I’m leaning that direction. And GFS has a lot of choices that would look good in the black pickguard (yeah, I can be shallow).

The pickup that it came with was okay. Adding enough distortion equalizes most things. But straight into the amp it was squealy and bland sounding. The pickup that's in it now drives my Vibrolux nicely.

Be advised...the control cavity is a bit shallow because the bodies on these aren't full thickness. I had to router it out a little deeper to make room for the push/pull pot.

Thanks for the heads-up, ElJay370!I had my suspicions after seeing how thin it was. If I go that route (so to speak), I will take a couple of plies out just to be safe!
