    Hi!

I recently bought an used Dr Z mini Z 5w head which I absolutely love, but my only cabinet is a Marshall VBC412 with Celestion G12H30 55hz speaker. It works perfect for bass but is a bit overkill for the little Dr Z.
I'm thinking of building my own open back 1x10 but need some advice on what 10" speakers is out there. Mostly playing old school inspired rock and funk so I need something that works well for that.

Will be using the rig for home use and recording, never really tried a "good" 1x10 cab but think it will work better for my use than a 1x12.

So please feel free to come with your opinions on the subject and discuss your favorite (and not favorite) speakers!

I have a Eminence Ragin Cajun in my tweed Champ clone and it sounds really good. I'm not sure how the mini Z compares with a
Champ circuit but the Champ and the Ragin Cajun with a tele running through them sound just like Steve Cropper back in the Booker T and the MGs days.

I use a Eminence Copperhead in my Princeton - also a really nice speaker. The Copperhead is a little darker than the RC.

I just found a pair of early 70's Kasino (Kustom) 2x10 PA speakers that have CTS drivers in them, and they have a great vintage tone. They make my 2 watt Greta amp sound absolutely huge and loud!

I got really lucky and bought them both for $50! I'm not sure how they would sound alone, but they sound great in pairs, and monstrous in quads!

I get lucky sometimes... I figured I was paying for the cabs only, and that I would need to replace the speakers, and I was glad just to get the two cabs for that low price.

When I actually tried them out (I did have to rewire them. Someone had wired them for 32 Ohms!), I was floored! Two nice, affordable cabs, and 4 really nice, vintage speakers thrown in for free is the way I look at it! o_O

It might be hard to find these, but if you ever see any, you might want to check them out for nice, but very inexpensive, vintage speakers.

The same speakers were also used in some Kustom and Fender amps, among others.

I have a Weber Sig 10 in my little 5 watt, open back combo and it sounds great. I was really shocked at how good such an inexpensive speaker could sound but I am definitely sold on it!

I started a similar thread thread about half a year ago looking for something similar to what you are looking for. Our very own Muchxs recommended the Eminence George Allasandro. That is what I got and sounds perfect on my VHT S6U 6 watt head for classic rock. I could not be happier. It even sounds great on my 2W Greta. I think he uses these often in his famous amps if I'm not mistaken.

I have a 10" Dr. Z 16 ohm speaker in my homemade cab.
Big Heavy magnet, no other info to be found on it. Bought it used off Kijiji

The Dr. Z website has the Z-10 custom made by Eminence for $60. I have a pair in my MAZ Jr. They sound great.

My vote goes to... Ragin' Cajun as well. Tried it in different configs, with different amps. Great sound all over!

I built a 5w tweed champ, and put a WGS Veteran 10" in it. Couldn't be happier with it. Sounds great, breaks up nicely when pushed, and is inexpensive at > $50 on musician's friend.
