The most atrocious stink bomb ever wrapped in the mantle of country music, ever, IMO.
I had the misfortune of seeing David Allan Coe live at the Stockyards Music Festival once, while waiting for Merle who should have headlined....and Hank Williams Jr., who was the featured act, and a bigger disappointment than even DAC. But..

Regarding Coe, I've never heard that kind of language onstage before or since.
Zero respect for him.

In addition to a lot of what's already been posted, this has always been one of my favorites. They didn't call him "The Voice" for nothing...

one of my NUMEROUS favorites :)

The chords (iirc, a total of four) and the melody and the message really come together at the end of the verses. Ime.

I'd like Rocky Top except for that step-wise parallel move* (chords) b6 b7 1 at the end of the chorus? under the title words? Seems like a rock move, a TV show theme, or something.

Davis Sisters on p.1 of this thread harmonize great -I hadn't known of them - thanks, loopfinding.
[edit - Dang, Skeeter Davis! I didn't put that together]

*If key of C then I'm whining about Ab Bb C (chords)

I think "Single Again" and "She's Actin' Single (I'm Drinkin' Doubles)" by Gary Stewart are great songs.

Every song on John Prine's album 'Sweet Revenge' is great. At least among the greatest IMHO

But if "greatness" also takes into account that song's impact on the genre, I think the only correct answer is "most of Hank Williams Sr's catalog"

I’m a jugé Classic country fan
Now he is not reknown as a country artist but Tom Waits Blind Love is great
Specially when covered by Bob Seger
