BTW, never leave the room when a Marx Bros movie is on; Grocho is way to fast for general attention. Learn the names; Grocho, Chico and Harpo. And they all played instruments!

Haven't seen the Tom Hanks movies mentioned, Bachelor Party or The Money Pit, so I'll add those.

Predictable comic genius from Peter Sellers... Here's one clip from... A shot in the dark...

In the (sub?)category of funniest animated movies, this is my pinnacle-good #1. So freakin' charming.

Its a Mad, Mad, Mad World... (did I leave out a Mad somewhere?)

Its got many comedians from the 1920s-1963 in it somewhere. (Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett, Mickey Rooney, Jonathan Winters, Dick Shawn, Jimmy Durante, the Three Stooges, Don Knotts, Milton Berle, Terry Thomas, Phil Silvers, Buster Keaton...and Spencer Tracy.)
Looking for the money buried under "The Big W"

The scenes of Jonathan Winters destroying the gas station and Arnold Stang as a gas station attendant are hilarious!
Also, Jimmy Durante literally kicking the bucket as he kicks the bucket.

I have seen it dozens of times and still watch it every year.

    Alternate choice: Dr Strangelove

I think "Animal House" is one of the funniest movies of all time and perhaps my best in-theater experience enjoying a comedy. I was 12 when it came out, and the naked girls certainly didn't detract from the experience. It goes without saying (but here I am saying it) that the film would be savaged if it were released today.

Oh! I just remembered one of my favorite -- if not my very favorite -- comedy of all time: 1972's "What's Up, Doc?" It's also got a San Francisco street chase that tops "Bullitt." Here's part of it:

Unforgiven! That was real slapstick when little Bill says, I don't deserve to die, I was building a house, and Munny shoots him with a Spencer saddle ring rifle.

I had to stop reading as so many funny films are mentioned that I keep contradicting myself with my likes!

Best.So hard to pick just 1. My parents allowed me to awake early am, 1 or so, to watch wc fields or marx bros.As long as I had my homework done.I was in grade school. As for honorable mentions, I think "Night Patrol" with the unknown comic ,Linda Blaire, and many other comics is very funny. Fat boys "The Disorderlies" keeps me laughing. Most any Peter Sellers. I Love You Alice B. Toklas, The Party, and most of all, The Magic Christian.

True story about Spinal Tap. The "mockumentary" style has become so common it is almost outdated at this point. But way back in the '80s when Spinal Tap came out, this style was pretty new. I saw Spinal Tap when it first came out, and there must have been only about a dozen people in the theater that time. I'm pretty sure I was literally the only person who realized it was meant to be a comedy. I was the only one laughing. People were kind of looking at me funny, like "what is wrong with this guy?"
