Great guitarists that aren't well known but should be.

Duke Tumatoe. If you’ve heard of him, I’ll bet you’re from the Midwestern US. Original member of REO Speedwagon but split before they made it. Fantastic guitar player and entertainer.

Danny Kirwin. And the average listener might not know Richard Thompson.

Jesse Ed Davis? Dave Lindley? Peter Green? Gary Moore?

It’s hard for me to answer. Most of us are guitar freaks, so we know Bill Kirchen. But not sure he’s famous.

+1 on all of these guys! Lindley and Jesse Ed are two of my personal favorites. NOBODY under the age of 50 seems to know about Jesse Ed Davis...However, ask a guitar player, "Think about the guitar solo on 'Doctor My Eyes.'" Woah! That's who that is?

Oh, and he usually played a Telecaster...

My wife and I were fortunate enough to travel up to Connecticut to hang out at Simon's final 'studio' rehearsal for his farewell tour (I'm old friends with his manager), and you're absolutely right. We got to watch him run down 'The Boxer' and 'Homeward Bound,' and his fingerpicking on both was effortless and pristine.

I never thought much of his playing until I saw him do it right in front of me. Very, very impressive.

He really is scarily proficient on the acoustic guitar...and all without losing any of the "soul" from the song.

As always, I bring up Jim Thomas of The Mermen.

Jim really plays down the flash in favor of staying true to his compositions. Maybe it's not for everybody.

Unnecessarily lumped in with "3rd wave surf acts", yes he touches on surf, but man does he go way beyond that. I live just over the hill from Santa Cruz and am lucky to catch The Mermen 4 times a year.

Trevor Rabin.

Yes, he was famous in Yes, but the stuff on there was - for the most part - tame. I've heard this guy just let it rip on one of Rick Wakeman's albums (Never is a Long Long Time). It is something to hear.

Billy Talent’s Ian D’sa is, in my humble opinion, an underrated player.

The music will definitely not be for everyone but this guy’s chops and song writing skills are definitely unique.

Do check him out, his riffs are simply genius.

Two Ausssie guitarists.
A guy called Ian Moss ( search Youtube for Cold Chisel)
and Malcolm Eastick ( see Youtube Andrew Durant Memorial Concert, a friend of mine who died age 25 from cancer in 1979).
Both are btilliant, stylish, melodic and could play with any of the best.
Oh! Kevin Borich a Kiwi whose lived in Oz since the early 70s. See " Gonna See My Baby Tonight" on youtube.
Sorry but I still don't know how topost these.

Martin Tallstrom on the LOEF Guitar site is a Swedish acoustic genius.
All these guys are great and I guarantee you'll like their work.

Difficult question given the variety of genres.

Antonio Rey is not a household name from the flamenco side.

Melvin Taylor has some great licks from the blues side.

Steven Stills always gets drowned in the noise of being a great songwriter and singer. But he's very mean on the guitar.

Just did a quick search. This came up -

He's done better.

He's pretty consistent.

I like his style of playing. It's intense without getting in to all that shredding thing.

Really superb guitarist anyway. He'd put a lot of guys to shame.

From the heart. Melodic. Rhythmic. Harmonic. Got it all. Got the funk too. Plus precision. Pretty rare combo. A complete guitarist. Love him.
