    A serial offender, there's a surprise.
At some point they just need to be removed from society for good.

Boom! Hey, I'm a progressive - how's about they teach him a new trade, like license plate making? Probably take 30 years to get right, so better start right away.

Having had guitars stolen from my home an article such as this warms the heart.

What's that thing they used to have where they would padlock a thief into it and leave him in a public place where people could yell at him and throw rotten food at him. I thought that was a great idea.

Grand theft auto and burglary? Minor stuff. Stealing guitars? Send him away for a long time.

Back then I think the stocks were for people caught consorting with the devil--drinking, dancing, kissing, speaking against doctrine, etc. Thieves would be hanged, pretty much.

I like the old chain gang practice. Put these guys performing useful tasks, like trimming weeds along the shoulders and medians of the state highways, of picking up the endless trash thrown from vehicles. They should not be allowed to hang out in air conditioned cells with TV privileges.

Still used in our parts. No chains, but prisoners do road and highway cleanup and work the dumps / transfer stations.

Yeah, it's great when they're caught, but it's a real bummer when, like in this case, you find out they have several prior arrests that includes grand theft auto and burglary. If it was up to me, I'd put him through the woodchipper and be done with it.
