Going back a few years we had a barber shop in Birmingham with topless women giving haircuts. For whatever reason the business didn't last very long. Perhaps they just opened in the wrong place.
My barber shop in Eado (that's hipster lingo for East Downtown Houston)Has a kegerator made from a 50's GE Refrigerator and serve free beer as well. I work for GE so that is sort of cool. They Tap a local Brewery and it's usually really good. I rarely take advantage because I usually go in the morning. So I get a cup of coffee.

There was an excellent barber shop in McAllen, TX that offered a free beer while you waited for your cut.
It was quite the popular salon de coiffure.

That's the same exact setup here. Kegerator behind the front desk, with a local brew on tap, though I didn't see the brand of the fridge.
Also, she offered me coffee or beer, and I chose the beer.
Listen, I drink about three beers a year anymore. I end up using more beer for my southwest meat marinade than I ever drink. But the novelty (for me) of being offered a beer while I wait for a haircut, well, they got me... even if I did really pay for it in the cost of the haircut. If it had been Bud Light, or similar, I would not have fallen for the gimmick. But a local nut brown that I'd never tasted? Their marketing worked on me.
I'm pretty sure if that had been Birmingham Alabama, they'd be running 24 hours a day!

A local chain got in trouble for doing that. The state liquor control board said that you've gotta have a liquor/bar license to serve beer, so the barbershop had to shut that part down.
Here... I think it has to do with selling it, versus giving it away. I think if they give it away (build it into the price of the haircut) it's ok.

Michigan has some super complicated laws about liquor and stuff. There's something about the percentage of food vs. beer vs. liquor/wine that you sell in relation to your total business income. Since 100% of their income came from haircuts, and they served beer, the law required that they sell the beer for a profit and had the barbershop in accordance with local and state liquor laws.
And alcohol aside, I think there have been a few restaurants in the area that were shut down because they took in more money than they expected to.

Tru dat, every time I get a haircut at one of those places I swear I ain't gonna fall for their tale of woe, (they all have one) but I do, and out comes the extra bucks.
You know I've been thinking it over, I'm gonna buy me one of those big paisley print red bandanas and the next time I go in for a haircut and the lady starts in on her tale of woe, I'm gonna whip that thing out, start balling and give my nose a good goose honkin' blow! If she opens her mouth again, I'll just start in all over again!

I love it! You drove by the place - in person! - you were actually there. You saw the BEER sign - in person! - you were actually there in front of the place. You stopped your car, right there in front of the place. And then you went to your telephone to check their website. Wouldn't want to step out of the car unnecessarily! And people wonder why this world has become so impersonal...

If I had discovered on their website that the beer was for sale (not free)... I would not have stepped out of my truck, and I would still have medium length hair to this very day.
