Didn’t Dylan once say he never heard a Gord song he didn’t like?
Cheers,
Geoff
Saw him in ‘69 in East Lansing and then ‘72 at the MSU Jenison Fieldhouse. Latter show it was just he, an upright bass player and accompanying guitarist. Don Quixote Album.
He was the consummate performer. Witty, humble, amazing.
I play several of his songs ‘cause I can sing in his range.
Sang along to a lot of his songs with my 6th grade hippie music teacher.
Saw a documentary about him a few years ago. Said he'd never get married again because sharing royalties (community property) with a spouse was just too expensive, reffering to 'Sundown'.
Turns out it was written about John Bulishi.
The wife in question was the mysterious woman investigated in John's death.
My personal favorite
Well he sure can’t anymore. I’d never seen him in concert so maybe three years ago went and saw him. Looks awful. Sounds awful. His voice is shot.
All the things you mentioned in your assessment of a more recent concert are blunt and true. For many people, myself included, he means a lot more than the proficiency which his current state allows. To me, Dylan and Gord helped shape my life at a very tender age right when it was needed most. I have played “Beautiful” so many times on acoustic, sometimes I really think I wrote it and Gord snatched it from me. Of course he did not, but that’s how it feels. So, out of respect for a living legend, if he comes by this way and is still capable of playing and singing anything even resembling music, I’m putting it on my priority list. Ok, I won’t pay 100 bucks to go see him, that’s where I draw the line-for anyone really.Well he sure can’t anymore. I’d never seen him in concert so maybe three years ago went and saw him. But the guy I went with works with a guy who goes to the same gym Lightfoot goes to and apparently he he’s there all the time and works out and is really quite fit. But doesn’t look that great cuz he’s so skinny.
Did sit on the stool next to him at a Don Ross - acoustic fingerstyle virtuoso - show one time. And apparently Gord visited Don sometimes which at the time would have been my neighbour, so, ooh, almost brushes with greatness back in the 90s.
Those are my Gord stories and I’m sticking to them.
Cheers,
Geoff
It was written about Cathy Evelyn Smith, the woman Belushi was with when he died. I don't think Gord was ever married to her.Sang along to a lot of his songs with my 6th grade hippie music teacher.
