Saw him in ‘69 in East Lansing and then ‘72 at the MSU Jenison Fieldhouse. Latter show it was just he, an upright bass player and accompanying guitarist. Don Quixote Album.
He was the consummate performer. Witty, humble, amazing.
I play several of his songs ‘cause I can sing in his range.

Well he sure can’t anymore. I’d never seen him in concert so maybe three years ago went and saw him. Looks awful. Sounds awful. His voice is shot. But the guy I went with works with a guy who goes to the same gym Lightfoot goes to and apparently he he’s there all the time and works out and is really quite fit. But doesn’t look that great cuz he’s so skinny.

Did sit on the stool next to him at a Don Ross - acoustic fingerstyle virtuoso - show one time. And apparently Gord visited Don sometimes which at the time would have been my neighbour, so, ooh, almost brushes with greatness back in the 90s.

Those are my Gord stories and I’m sticking to them.

Cheers,
Geoff

Sang along to a lot of his songs with my 6th grade hippie music teacher.

Saw a documentary about him a few years ago. Said he'd never get married again because sharing royalties (community property) with a spouse was just too expensive, reffering to 'Sundown'.
Turns out it was written about John Bulishi.
The wife in question was the mysterious woman investigated in John's death.

The song was released in 1974 and John Belushi died in 1982. I had no idea Gordon Lightfoot had that kind of perception!

I believe he had a stroke in the early 2000's. And he's up there in years.

I'm a big fan. Got into his music when the album If You Could Read My Mind came out (previously called Sit Down Young Stranger). At that point I started collecting all his earlier material and every new album that would come out.
I read his biography (by Nicholas Jennings). He's been married three times, most recently in 2014. Cathy Smith (also had an affair with Levon Helm) was the connection to Belushi. Lightfoot was never married to her, but did live with her. He's had a few medical issues in the past 15 or so years. It did state that Lightfoot was one of Dylan's favorite songwriters.
Big proponent of the environment and avid canoer and sailor.
He's had quite the life.

You opened a can of worms, now stuff is just popping into my head. :)
The jacket he is wearing on the cover of Don Quixote and Gord's Gold was given to him by Jerry Jeff Walker. They were performing at the Troubador. Upon leaving the hotel JJW tossed him the jacket.

All the things you mentioned in your assessment of a more recent concert are blunt and true. For many people, myself included, he means a lot more than the proficiency which his current state allows. To me, Dylan and Gord helped shape my life at a very tender age right when it was needed most. I have played “Beautiful” so many times on acoustic, sometimes I really think I wrote it and Gord snatched it from me. Of course he did not, but that’s how it feels. So, out of respect for a living legend, if he comes by this way and is still capable of playing and singing anything even resembling music, I’m putting it on my priority list. Ok, I won’t pay 100 bucks to go see him, that’s where I draw the line-for anyone really.

But, as is my proclivity, I digress. Much love for GL.

It was written about Cathy Evelyn Smith, the woman Belushi was with when he died. I don't think Gord was ever married to her.
