Google phone number ID verification scam - what's the point of that?

I've had folks contact me about items that I post for sale on FB Marketplace and they want me to send them my phone number and then ask to send them a Google ID code. I figured it is a scam so I don't do that but can anyone explain what the deal is? What do they get out of it?
Also another scam is they want to pay with Venmo, then you get a message from Venmo that they sent "too much" money, so they want you to send the difference back to them.
Scammers must never sleep...

They're trying to steal your Google account. They use the password/account recovery tool, put in your phone number, and you get the code in a text that lets them get in and reset your password and steal the account and anything attached to it like stored Chrome passwords for banking or credit card info.

I wondered, they wouldn't get anything since I don't store that info but thanks

My phone pings at least a half dozen times a day. The message always says, your attempt to log onto gmail failed. I have YouTube tv or I wouldn't have Google anything intentionally. After the holidays, I'm going to cancel my gmail account, and a number of other things. I'm going to clean out some more credit cards and cut down as far as I can on having anything to do with business in general. I'm going to figure out a way to block everything I can get by without. What do I wish? I wish to be left alone!
