I'm waiting for her letter defending small artists from record labels.

As silly a move as that was by Apple, people really need to start realising that it's the labels who are really screwing over artists, not the streaming services. Apple are probably desperately trying to make their streaming service a viable business, which is a tremendously difficult thing to do right now. Spotify haven't recorded a profit since they launched about 8 years ago.

Really? Record labels are not on the up and up?

Very much agree. The worst of the greed and corruption is the label; blaming Apple or a streaming service is like blaming the weather man for your flooded basement. Although, I did like that someone pushed back on Apple - no love lost with me for that company.

Haha, while it's no big secret that the labels screw people over, I've noticed a lot of that flak being redirected to streaming services, even though they're mostly just trying to make the best of a bad situation.

But in Apple's case I have less sympathy. They can easily afford to pay artists during that free trial out of their own pockets.

    Agreed. Good on her.

And to all the Apple freaks, that was a really cool thing that "just works" for them to try wasn't it?

It's ok to offer a free service for a limited time, but not at the expense of those who provide the product unless they agree beforehand. Somebody at Apple needs to go to Basic Business Practices 101.

Glad to see that it was inclusive and she handled it in a very professional manner. Quite the business woman. Apple was smart to realize a mistake. Seems to have worked out well. Online publishing is a way to beat the labels and so many artists have gone that way.

Don't think for a second that Swift's move was motivated by altruism.
    Pure self interest, nothing else.
She wasn't going to make money on a new release.
That is all that is going on.

It was for 1989 which has been out the better part of a year.

But if you think the main objective was her profit alone, she's miles beyond you.

PR, marketing, public image savvy and she had enough sense to work with the Swede's...

I hate freaking Apple. Lost a huge part of my digital music library because of them and an admitted fault in one of their products (I thought backing it up twice would have been sufficient...)

Mike you know there are plenty of people lined up who will tell you that Apple's losing your data is your fault, right? And the success rate of your experience with Apple stuff is parallel to how schmardt or how un-schmardt you are? :D

(which makes me a complete idiot, by the way)

    I respect her for that.

Fascinating that the push back started from a 25 year old. I would guess that musicians with 25 + years of experience would scream first.

I'm not sure it really takes much to speak out against something most people aren't going to be in favour of. Absolute worst case scenario she has to hold off buying a new jet til the next quarter. Best case her sales go up from the good publicity. Not that I have anything against Miss Swift, nor do I disagree with her, but it's hardly a brave act.
