Another vote for Guitar Madness. I have a very nice sounding set of '57, Alnico II's in a Hamer. Double cream bridge, zebra neck.

I also put a A2 middle single coil in a Kramer who's original single coil gave up many years ago. VERY usable middle pickup.

I happy with all three pickups and would put GM pickups in any guitar.

Epiphone ProBuckers are supposed to be pretty good PAF types pickups. You can probably find some used from someone who upgraded.

Gibson 490R and 490T. Smooth and creamy, low output. Probably my favorite sounding humbuckers ever.

I think those are far outside the "cheap" requirement of the OP.

Yep. My bad. They used to be fairly inexpensive.

I just put a GFS Alnico II 8.7K in my CV Tele Thinline. So far, so good, I really like it. (Please forgive my glare.)

    Ditto.

I'd go for the Vintage Cleans based on the OP.

I really like the specs of the stewmac golden age stuff, I bet that would work.

To me, a perfect PAF has A2 mags, about 8k (or maybe lower) of 42awg enamel wire, and absolutely no wax potting.

Had a look at the Bootstrap site, I’m impressed-USA made at GFS prices! Nice to know that, as I’m planning a Nashville style tele build after I finish this guitar... likely I’ll be ordering these in the next week.

    thanks,
    Franc Robert

How did I forgot about Guitar Madness? I used a set of their Smooth Velvet Alnico 2 strat pickup in my Bullet strat strung for Nashville tuning. I could not bring myself to spend more for the pickups than the guitar so I rolled the dice on them. They are very nice sounding and the whole set was $26 at the time. I have not tried the Humbuckers yet but I have a set of their Railbuckers on a shelf somewhere waiting for an opportunity and a Mini humbucker I want to try in my Squier CVC tele

The funny thing is that price-wise, Guitar Madness prices make GFS look like boutique pickups by comparison.

I have and love the pickups from both those companies. GFS has cooler designs, GM has better prices and a more basic product line. The thing I will say about GFS is it seems he specializes in a lot of the weird, intriguing stuff.
