Got a good deal on a Japanese Tokai Les Paul copy with p90s.
This might fill a p90 shaped hole left by an Epiphone Casino I sold last year.

Bought it second hand for 600$, and had to drive 1.5h to the other side of lake Geneva to grab it. With the nice weather were having, the drive was more than pleasant!

It has some small dings but otherwise is in good condition. So far, I've just looked briefly in the control cavity and measured the dcr of the pickups. I was told that one of the pickups had been replaced with some model of bare knuckle pickup, and the bridge was stock Tokai. On first inspection, looking at the leads and the labels on them, it would seem both pickups are bare knuckle (Yipee!), but I'd have to actually take out the pickups to be sure. I'll do that eventually, but I'm in no rush.
Judging by the dcr readings of 6.8k and 7.5k, they're probably the blue note set, an alnico 2 low output model.

I also noticed a push-pull on the neck tone knob. The seller didn't mention that; I wonder if he knew it was there. It looks like it puts the middle position out of phase, but that doesn't seem right with a single conductor and shield...

Otherwise, it is very well built and plays nicely. Tomorrow I can hopefully plug it into a proper amp and get a better impression. 20200408_181212.jpg 20200408_190445.jpg

Nice! I love p90s in gold tops!

But.....I have to ask. What do you keep in the cage? Looks like maybe tigers?

:) That's the cage for taking our dog with us. It's not that big, but enough for our 20kg Australian Shepherd to be confortable.
(And when I take the cage out of the car and say leave it on the porch, the neighbourhood kids climb inside and play :).

Glad to see you pulled the trigger on it! Tokai Japan makes a superb guitar.

Lovely. I hope you played 'Smoke On The Water' on it, given the location

    I will eventually :).
You could see the casino from where I took that photo ( see the red dot).

Otherwise I measured the pickups again, they actually measure 6.6k and 7.9k. Might be pickups from two different sets, but I actually enjoy a big difference in output between neck and bridge (like on my tele).
I haven't been able to play loudly yet, but so far the pickups sound very clear.

I might change the phase reversal some day: since it has a single conductor and a braided shield, it doesn't have a separate ground wire. This makes the braided shield and the pickup pole pieces hot when the switch is pulled.
But it doesn't seem to add any extra noise, and it actually makes the middle position hum cancelling.

If I do any work in there, I might swap the leads on the pickup and flip the magnets to make the in-phase position hum cancelling.
