He also toured with PJ Harvey when I saw her. I caught him with Waits at the Don Hyde benefit in Oakland too.

I saw his band over in The Mission in SF way back. Elbo Room maybe? Great player

I was a Guitar Player subscriber in the Joe Gore years (mid-late 90s) and it was a tasty magazine then.

Gore’s writing was lucid, articulate and entertains with just enough smartassery to keep it fun without obscuring the content.

He had a good staff overall, from what I could tell...Art Thompson wrote some fun gear articles and Andy Aledort wrote some good artist-related music articles.

I remember one where he interviewed Junior Brown, captured Brown’s personality, dissected some of his moves on the guit-steel, and examined the two guit-steels in detail. It was a remarkable piece of work and a great read.

I really like this Ge Fuzz shootout/build-off/tone demo

I didn't know who he was when I met him in a friend's apartment in LA in about 1999. It took about three notes for me to realize that he was a gifted player with a great touch.

I first got interested in Joe when I watched a few demo videos at YouTube and thought "where's the shredding"? because there wasn't any. In my mind this is a great advantage. 80% of flipping gear demos are wank-a-thons. His demos are really thoughtful and show how the gear responds to dynamics and volume knob settings.

He's got a great sense of humor as can be seen at: https://www.clubbo.com/

He's also managed to concoct his own clever line of mostly distortion pedals. Buy one now!

At the risk of being obvious, PJ Harvey is a trip! Apparently she counts Captain Beefheart among her influences.

Thanks, that was (unlike many demo vids) quite informative.

I believe Lollar is the only one making GF's with the original style Rubber magnets while everybody else is using the ceramic and Alnico magnets.

The Lollar's sound and act just like the originals while the others are mostly P90's that are tweaked to emulate the GF's.

I bought a set of the Alnico DeArmond style GF pickup from Allparts last year and they are very good pickups for what they are and fairly priced.
The Victory Lowriders are really nice with ceramic magnets, but a bit more costly.

The Allparts and Victory pickups are smaller than the P90's and closer to original GF size.

Allparts also has a Mustache type and Silver Foil type pickup.

I love Joe's playing. You can feel it comes from deep inside. He always comes with the most interesting voicings IMO, like in this video about flatwounds:

I really like Joe Gore's videos and his write-ups and reviews. Thanks for posting. As someone else said above, I appreciate that it's not just a bunch of wankery. And that he often actually plays clean.

And another wonderful thing about his video style - he doesn’t speak a word, yet says so much.

Pretty sure mojotone also uses rubber magnets – and I thought Novak did too, but I’m not 100% sure.

He was part of the Oranj Symphonette also, I really like their first (only?) two records.

This is the Oranj Symphonette version of the Mancini song he started riffing on in the video @EsquireBoy posted.

I believe your right on Novak's pickups, forgot about those. Not sure on Mojotone.
