The Fillmore SF???? I thought that Bill Graham (now deceased, of course) closed both the San Francisco location and the Fillmore East many years ago? Somebody catch me up to speed on the venues, please???

If I'm totally off-base with my question, just ignore it.

I spent a good bit of time in SF as a boy and a teen when my uncles & grandparents lived there and the east bay area. We got dirt cheap tickets (week apart) to visit a couple years back and after looking at hotel & even hostel prices we backed out. Holy smokes it's expensive to hang out there these days!

I'm 65, and grew up in the Bay Area, and feel extremely fortunate for that, because I saw most of the great 60s-70s bands live. But, I was too young for the original Fillmore, because by the time I started going to concerts it had been replaced by the Fillmore West (Carousel Ballroom) at the corner of Market and Van Ness, and I probably saw many more shows at Winterland, because by the time many acts, especially English ones, were big enough to tour nationwide Winterland was being used by Bill for it's larger capacity. It was such a magic time for music and culture in general that those of us who got to experience it first hand are really blessed. But, even Shoreline in Mt. View, another Bill Graham venue, was a godsend, as I saw lots of great shows there too. I always got lawn tickets, 'cause the sound was better there, and sitting in the seats felt like being at a ball game, as well as being too loud. The front of the lawn was the best sound IMO. Even the indoor Oakland Coliseum was a great sounding room, but I hated the Cow Palace. It sounded like S**T at every show I saw there. The Berkeley Community Theater and the Greek Amphitheater in Berkeley were also great, as were Naples Pavilion and Frost Amphitheater at Stanford. I never went to the original Fillmore until it had reopened, and I saw some good shows there too, as well as the Great American Music Hall.
Also, the final week of shows at Fillmore West before it closed were amazing, and the Dead's New Year's Eve shows every year at Winterland were iconic.

Great American Music Hall is one of my favorite venues. I concur with most of what @DougM has to say.

I've also spent some nice nights at the Warfield back in the good old days.

I never went to the Warfield or Slim's (Boz Scaggs' club) that much, but I did go to the three Keystones a lot, the one in SF, the one in Palo Alto and the one in Berkeley.

The whole scene has changed. A friend of mine promoted at Slims/GAMH until recently. Corporate bookers AEG have taken over a lot of venues.

I've caught myself reminiscing the early 90's & on lately. All the small bars & clubs that are gone. All that were there before me....

I bet the Bay was a blast in the 70's.

It truly was! Tickets at the Fillmore were $4, which increased to $6 at Winterland. Imagine seeing Jeff Beck, Jimi, Clapton, Zeppelin, Traffic, Tull, Floyd, FM (the original lineup), CSNY in all it's iterations, the Allman Bros., Santana, Janis, Deep Purple, the Stones, the Faces, Joe Walsh, Poco, the Dead, Quicksilver, the Airplane, CJ and the Fish, Mountain, Johnny Winter, Dave Mason, the Who, Chicago, the Eagles, Jackson Browne, and all the others in a 1,500-5,000 capacity auditorium with great sound, for those prices, and with three bands. And, a lot of the opening acts were really good bands too.

I was there in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Amazing music and memories.

SF add Mabuhay Gardens - Nico, Avengers, Nuns, No Sisters - and deaf club. i beam-dream syndicate and Sisters of Mercy. Steamin’ Freeman at Mooney’s.

Stephane Grapelli, Blossom Dearie, Mingus and Asleep at the Wheel at Great American Music Hall. Gil Scott Heron At Wolfgang’s. George Benson, Elvin Jones, Mary Lou Williams, Pharoah Sanders, John Handy, McCoy Tyler and Les McCann at SF Keystone. Johnny Thunders, Commander Cody and the LPA, MAN and Asleep at Berkeley Keystone. Bob Marley and the Wailers at Oakland Fox. Asleep and Cody at Longbranch. Bobby Bland at Ruthies Inn. Pretenders at Kezar Pavilion.

Winterland was SLADE, Jeff Beck, Steely Dan, Humble Pie, Bowie, Mott the Hoople, Robin Trower....

Moby Grape, Michael Hurley, Sandy Bull, Rain Parade, John Fahey, and Holy Modal Rounders at places the names of which I can’t remember.

Airplane, Starship, Dead and Todd Rundgren In Golden Gate Park.

And more I can’t recall.

All that fun was tempered with general atmospheric weirdness and vibes around the post-hippie hard drug scene in The Haight, Jim Jones/People’s Temple, Milk/Moscone murders, Zodiac Killer, SLA, Zebra Killers and the economic/demographic transition of SF from a working class/port/industrial city to a more knowledge based/ financial services and services economy.
