My mom's basement.
Sugar and portion size, more than likely.

BTW, in my high school years in SW MI we had many traumatic moments. Murder, death by accident, death by disease, robberies, drug busts, teenage pregnancies, etc. All in a suburban town of 20,000 to 25,000 people and at least 60-some miles from any more major metropolitan city.
Yes, good points to make. Crime, health and social problems are all over.

My sophomore year ('68-69) I was too young to drive, and we lived a 45-minute bus ride up the hill from school. A friend from the football team, a senior, lived further up the mountain, and he gave me rides, most mornings and every afternoon after practice. His dad owned a car dealership, and my friend got to have some of the cool rides that his dad took in on trade. The coolest ones I remember were a '64 GTO and a '66 Comet, both with 4-on-the-floor and big rumbly motors, both with 8-track stereos.

Looked more like this for me.

I looked just like the kid on the yellow bike.

Yah! Some folks might've had their GTOs by then, but I was all of 13 myself and biked to school.

First time I have seen a Monza since 1977, lol.
My best friend in HS had a Monza Spyder we called “Boris.” He had an after-school job working in a machine shop, where he would fabricate switch panels and mounts for lights.

We spent many an hour installing additional lights and switches for overriding brake lights, taillights, etc. - all in the interest of avoiding being caught by the police in our rural county.

Ironically, he recently retired after a career in law enforcement.

I was 14 in 1977 going to Ponce De Leon Jr. High in Coral Gables, FL.
No one was driving, the student parking area was full of bicycles :)
In '77 I had a 10 speed, which was what I mostly remember seeing then.

Hrrumph. I blame the '80s on the class of '77.
My best smile so far today.

You might need to elaborate. In another post here I said the around 1977 punk music was perfect timing and fit for me. Now we just had a post here about Miami Vice and I remembered my brief experiment with a white sport coat.

The way my kids have stolen my '70s and '80s stuff and seek resale shops has me laughing about both decades. I haven't yet been very nostalgic about eras the way so many are.

Still hard to believe that me and most of my buddies, had shotguns and rifles in our trucks, right there in our HS parking lot.
Most of us didn't even lock the truck half the time.

Nobody had a cell phone.
1977 predates cell phones generally available but there was lots of passion for and pursuing new technology. IIRC Apple II computer was 1977. A lot of sports gear became more high tech about then. Cable TV was having much growth in that period but build out still did not reach all over.

And hand held calculators had become affordable, at least for students like those in the op. Those were pretty amazing bits of kit in the day.
