I never thought about that till now.

I just figured it was a progression + intro lick that Stills or Young played.
( that staccato attack sounds like something Neil would play, with Stills doing the pretty 'steel' double stops against it...)

But its probably really an Irish/bluegrass fiddle melody they are using.

It's a very common bluegrass instrumental...everybody and his brother has recorded it....it's in many "introduction to Flatpicking" books..Im experiencing a bit of brain flatulence over it and it's driving me crazy....
