Hey giogolf, I didn't see your question about the tone control behaviour.
The classic Champ single tone control Is more effective at lower volumes. But It helps cutting excess of treble at high volumes.
It may be limited, but It eats Just a little gain from the preamp; a full TMB tone network would decrease the gain of the amp a lot, since you have only two gains stages.
Keep it simple.
About head or combo It would be tough, the champ format is super cute and flexible, but pluggin in every Cab you find Is great fun.
I had a vht special 6 for years and took It to almost all my rehearsals and small gigs. Of course I had a nice 1x12 Cab, but I enjoyed going with just the head and see what was around in the room at the moment, I had bad, but also great experiences; sometimes I still think about an Orange 2x12 Cab, It was celestial, and in the end It was a couple of Vintage 30.
If you stick on changing the OT, get a multi tap one, It would be coherent the head format.
