The issue of Keith Richards’ amps has been discussed a few times on the TDPRI over the past few weeks. I just listened to Gimme Shelter and was struck by the absolutely awesome tone of the lead guitar in the song (funny, seems to strike me every time I hear the song).

Does anyone of you have any ideas about how to get that tone?

Is a 335 through a cranked high power Twin with a pinch of reverb the only way to go? Or a couple of Ampeg V4’s, each with double 4x12’s, set up on stage in central park and cranked, on a sunny day? Or is it the usual, well known secret weapon, a small amp like a 5F1 or a Kalamazoo cranked in the studio?

Now, my firm conviction is that most of the tone characterizing any guitar player (any guitar player with a characteristic tone, that is :p ) has to come out of his fingers first, before it can go through and exit whichever amp he/she happens to use. But then again the gear has at least some effect on the final product leaving the speaker. Otherwise I wouldn’t know how to justify another amp build…
