I'd love to know what the defect was that could be "unsafe".

The biggest thing I could think of in a guitar like this that could result in it being unsafe would be inclusion of a poorly designed/managed Lithium Ion battery system that could result in a fire.

But that makes no sense, if that was the case they would never have run them over with an excavator.. they could have ended up with such a big fire they'd end up destroying the excavator.

Maybe they did try to give them away to needy kids and the kids took one look and said “thanks but no thanks”. :D

I realize that this is a Tele forum but, I am surprised at the amount of hate/anger/outrage over destroying some guitars that were deemed sub-standard. Go iron yer cargo pants to get the creases out of yer bum.

“Unsafe” components; Could be there was a circuit board with environmentally toxic components in there?

    I don’t know.

Still, this was a stupid exercise and only goes to alienate people from the new Gibson regime further. Should have donated them or (if they were insistent on destroying them) done the destruction in a private (unfilmed) setting, such as a wood chipper or furnace.

...or they could have given them to the needy who don’t have vacuum cleaners...since the Firebird X sucked so bad...

So, the most hated guitar by the most hated guitar company gets a big guitar destroying production put on youtube.

And now the internet goes on its merry hating way and hates the destruction of the guitars the internet hates?

It was pretty sickening to watch.
Gibson seems to be pretty dumb about PR as well.
But maybe it's time to just leave them alone?

Maybe we can generate mass internet hate of the bottled water industry's massive carbon footprint if we're sharpening our collective pitchforks to protest against wasteful corporate practices?
Plenty of atrocities all over the world right now, broken guitars are just not a thing in world atrocity.

So, there are levels of waste that should be tolerated. Got it.

I understand, in the grand scheme of life it's just stuff. The bigger horror is that they were created in the first place.

I dont believe anything about them being sub-standard or faulty. The Gibson employee in the comments admits that those were the biggest p.o.s. to ever come down the line.

Gibson never intended this to be known. Not now. Not ever.

Uh, tolerance is a spiritual principle!

Just noting all the outraged time and energy we see put in on the internet about some dumb corporate practice.

Outrage might be better spent on the truly outrageous.
    Just sayin'.

WRT Gibson never intending this to be known, why in hell did they make such a theatrical production out of it with video being shot?
Almost seems like shooting themselves in the feet is the game plan?

OTOH we keep giving dumb stuff lots of press, which is free advertising for them.

Maybe hated guitars will get hip with angry young men and guitar based Rock will make a comeback?
Then we can love Gibson again!

I am bit surprised a more efficient method for destroying unsalvageable guitars wasn't utilized.

The vid was made by a guy with the demolition crew, not Gibson. The guy had worked with Gibson in some capacity previously to the vid. He said there were Gibson employees present at times & he informed them he was filming it.

No one talking about the 335's getting snapped in half?

I think Gibson wanted this video out to generate publicity and to say "under new management...getting rid of the crap from the previous management." They destroyed flawed instruments that they didn't want to risk showing up on e-bay.

They could have used a saw instead of an expensive-to-lease machine, but the treads make for a better video. Video has gone viral. Mission accomplished.

This could have been a PR bonanza for Gibson. By doing something altruistic with those guitars they could have regained some of their already tarnished image..or at least not have allowed the footage of this to leak out.

From a business standoint I'm sure it makes sense but from how the public views the company..very bad move. Wontonly destroying what look like perfectly good guitars looks spiteful and foolish.
I own an SG and a Flying V,was planning on getting a Les Paul this year-screw that. I will never buy a Gibson product again.

This is Gibsons new method of product durability testing. Nothing to worry about, these are professionals.

Cheap advertising...guess they don't realize the world is laughing and will forget about this like later today. It will be out of the news in a couple weeks. Thread will shrivel up and that will be that. Problem product pulverized by dozer treads.
