Gibson to double acoustic guitar output
Gibson is betting the acoustic guitar sales boom of recent years will continue as it begins work this week to double the size of its Bozeman, Montana factory.

Media invitations to an event this coming Wednesday, 3rd March, were sent out late last week.

'(The) Gibson Acoustic facility in Bozeman, MT will have a one-hour groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the announcement of a massive expansion to Gibson’s Acoustic facility in Bozeman, MT. The new expansion will effectively double the size of the Gibson Acoustic facility. The 127-year-old brand is also building a Custom Shop in Bozeman that will celebrate the history and legendary quality of Gibson’s handcrafted acoustic guitars created by our skilled artists in Bozeman.

'Gibson is in major investment/expansion mode and prioritizing our acoustic facility and its artisans who create our intricate new acoustic guitar collections. The expansion of the Gibson Acoustic facility will lead to new job opportunities and recruitment of top talent on both the local and national level.'

I thought 2020 was a record year for guitars?

Gibson has rarely been a traditionally run company, for want of a better euphemism. For much of its history it has been skating close to the edge. It has periods of course of marvellous innovation and incredible people - Ted McCarty springs immediately to mind. But looked at as a whole, it has survived due to one thing - great products and a recognisable name. I know that the guitars went through a slump, which I suspect it’s coming through and exiting, but Gibson made, for the most part, great instruments. I’d argue a bit like the Beatles. Their worst songs are still better than a lot of bands best stuff. Would anyone knock back a Les Paul, or a 335, or an explorer or a V, or an SG? Let’s not even go into the acoustic range.

I think I went to their factory a couple years ago. I was expecting something like Martin, but it was just a building near the highway. Unmarked and closed on a Saturday. There was a Gibson trailer in the lot so I assume I was on the right place. Wouldnt take much to double the space as the building wasn't that big. Or maybe I was lost.

Bozeman...seems like that's where Flatiron was, before Gibson bought them? Of the 127 year history, how much of that success was in Kalamazoo and Nashville? Interesting location for a custom shop? Trying to mirror a certain company in Nazareth?

It'll of course be a disaster, and Guitar center is STILL going out of business. ;)

That's because your uncle said "hey, Flat6Driver, let's go visit Gibson. You remember how much you liked Disneyland, don't you?"

Gibson Bozeman has always made great guitars. Much better than Gibson ladder braced 60’s guitars with plastic bridges and laminated tops. Good luck fellows!

I think that's great... Gibson acoustics are wonderful, I own nine of them, and it's great to see that they are experiencing the growth they deserve.

I wonder if they are considering contract work for smaller builders. Otherwise, doesn't make sense to me.

I think it's a very safe bet that somewhere at Gibson HQ, there is a folder with sketches of a purple-burst quilted maple acoustic with a pearl and abalone snake uncoiling the full length of the fretboard, and instead of the little crown or diamond inlay the headstock has a top hat made of precious stones. In one corner of the sketch, "$25K?" with a smiley face next to it.

I hope that there's a space for people to make some archtops.

Gibson should open a factory that makes voice autotuners, that's the future.
