Does anybody know the special mojo in these pups? I recently acquired a CS 1960 LP Special and I love the tone of these pickups through my Fender amps. Is there a story here?

I don't think there is an actually CS P90. Its more or likely just some regular Gibson P90s and not those P100s. Gibson P90s are not really hot, just a good middle of the road P90. To me, they are still a little muddy in the neck position, I like an underwind one there. And finally, P90s sound great thru anything. My favorite sound.

Here's Gibson's chart that shows pickup output and that describes the components and materials. The bottom line is that P90s are excellent pickups, and there is only one Gibson P90.

I have several Gibsons with P90s, and for some reason, each of these guitars sounds RADICALLY different. The sound I really love is my non-reverse Firebird, which came with coil-tapping P90s. That guitar is way, way bright. My SG Classic, by contrast, is way, way DARK.

I have no idea why this is, and I would love to know what's going on in that Firebird, because I want my Casino to sound like that!

I wondered about the P90's in my Historic 54 LP also, because they sound so good. Looked into it a little and found out there is no special wind. Just the stock Gibby P90. which just happens to be a nice sounding pickup.

So your Custom Shop Gibby uses their stock pickup.

I'll vouch for the stock Gibson P90. I bought an LP Jr. and thought I'd be swapping the pickup out in no time. Turns out, I loved it and it covered EVERYTHING.

I have/have had more than my fair share of Gibson P90s! Always love them in the bridge, on some guitars the neck pickup tends to be muddy even with playing around with the height, but on others it's beautiful.

Will also agree on this. In the bridge, they ROCK. In the neck, I like an underwound P90, so the Gibson and Duncan stock/vintage winds can sometimes be too dark in the wrong guitar.
