I'm not in a rock band currently and I have this really great les paul sitting around not being used.

I've got a GFS surf 90 that I'm not using either.

Has anybody ever put a surf 90 in a les paul and used it to play country and rockabilly?

Just wondering if it could be a good combination. Its a pretty twangy pickup but right now I have it in a strat for experimentation...

Don't have a LP, but I think this combo would sound cool. Twanging, and lots of highs. I use my set in a Strat, and apart from obvious guitar design factors, I'd put them between a Tele bridge and Dynasonic/T-Armond fatness. I'd bet it'd end up sounding like a mid 50s Duo Jet--maybe try those 500k pots like Duo's had, but watch out-B.R.I.G.H.T.

I have one in a Flying V, and one in an SG. They sound great in the neck position. Go for it. I really love them. I am a boutique pickup snob, but these Surf 90's are amazing.

I'd imagine you'd get a very Cliff Gallup (Gene Vincent) sound

I've got a set in a big archtop hollowbody, they sound great

Me too...a Waterstone Cumulous, big jazz box, that I stripped all the gaudy gold hardware from, adding all chrome, including a Bigsby, coil taps & a pair of GFS Surf 90's.

That is too weird, because the guit I used for the Surf90s was a Waterstone Cumulus, also

    No kidding.

How does it sound when compared to traditional strat pickups?

first off let me say that I dont like most "traditional" strat bridge pickups, and switch them out to something else immediately.

Theres only ONE strat bridge pickup I have that I like, its an old, old Seymour Duncan straight-ahead style, so old it doesnt have a model number. Back then it was the only one he made and I'm wondering if he wound it himself. It sounds really good, to my old burnt ears.

But most of them are weak-sounding, thin.

So I dont have a traditional strat pickup really to compare it to. Lets just say the Surf-90 is not weak sounding or thin. Lots of bite. Good twang as well.

I had it done. So far I'm digging it.

My wife bought me the Gretsch ProClub duojet thing and I didnt like the neck.

So I had a friend put the Surf90 into my les paul clone. I had not been playing that guitar at all, it was just sitting there, so I thought what the hell, its just a pickup.

Sounds very "gretsch-ish" to me, some twangy goodness, and seems suitable for playing the country and rockabilly I like.

The GFS Memphis are also very Gretsch-like.

I'm wondering what those Surf 90s look like inside.

I did it. Like it a lot. Sorta gretschy but still has some of the LP vibe.

bitchin! I didnt do the neck pickup yet. I thought I had a Dream90 lying around but I must have lost it or traded it or gave it away.

    nice guitar!
