The green can sounds like Kraft parmesan cheese. I use the heck out of that when cooking pasta dishes. I have gone with the expensive wedge block. It always dries out or molds before I could finish. Aldi's canned parm by the way is Kraft equal.

It always depends on the item, many off brands are the same. Some things you don't go the cheap route (like paper products, and Fig Newtons....all copies of fig newtons are terrible)

I’ve been ditching the junk but you reminded me some of the off brand little Debbie stuff is pretty bad.

As in everything, "It depends."

I have many preferences and biases. Some are tried and tested, some are just what I've always done. I never liked the idea of "generic"...

I switched to JIF PB from Skippy PB back in the 70s after reading a consumer's report on various PBs. JIF had less rat in it. Miz Diane likes Peter Pan...we're a two PB household.

I gave up Stokely-Van-Camp beans due to Miz Diane's preference for Bush's beans. Occasionally, I'll sneak in a tin.

I generally don't buy food based on price or "savings." If I can't afford it, I don't eat it. When I was poor, I did change my preferences...but I never dropped my quality requirements. I never ate generic just because it was cheaper. I learned to cook so that I had control over the quality.

Yeah Bush can roll that beautiful bean footage but when I go to the store I reach for Van De Camp.

Anybody else remember when generic products came in a white container with black lettering? 😂
Yeah what as that all about?
Fighting a recession or some nutty thing like that?
I recall it was the 1970s and even cegarettes came in that stark black & white package.

These beans are good but the whole plum tomatoes are excellent.

When I started reading cases where prescription drugs made in China got tested in US labs and were in some cases found to be literally compressed sawdust, I stopped buying generic Advil and Tylenol.

May be isolated incidents, but Chinese manufacturing is cheaper partially because they have no OSHA, no FDA, and no EPA.
So what prevents toxic stuff from getting into our generic meds from China?
Their goodwill?

As the GMO, uh, lawyers pushed to prevent ingredients being disclosed on labels, which they have done pretty well with, that opened the door to grocers stocking meats from China without being required to disclose the origins on the packages.

Not for me thanks...

You started off mentioning prescription drugs, then went immediately to OTC drugs.

I honestly never paid any attention to this until I read your comment.

I'm pretty sure my mouth wash is not sawdust, although I could not find where it is manufactured, it is approved by the ADA.

I was able to find where my acetaminophen is manufactured: New York

So on simple things like that, I'm not opposed to generic, prescriptions are another thing altogether. With scripts I go with the recommendation of my PCP.

Well yeah not saying I fear that all generics are sawdust, just an example of the variable quality potential when a store brand may change vendors periodically and where foreign manufacturing lacks oversight or inspectors confirming safe condition in the handling of food & drugs we put into our bodies.

Other examples include stuff like baby carriages chopping off tots fingers, highly flammabe "flame retardant" baby clothes, and the merely annoying stuff from China that randomly falls into three categories:

Works fine
Works OK but dies in a short time
Does not work at all

I do buy store brand Glucosamine but some years ago switched from one generic to another and in a couple of weeks my elbows ached just like I was not taking the supplement.
Switched to some other brand and the pain went away again.
Tylenol and formerly Advil now Aleve, I have to take daily year after year. Not risking unknown sources!

Of course even with FDA inspectors we can get USA made defective stuff or toxic stuff and people get sick.
But I do not trust China for anything that matters.

I've never looked at the ingredients in peanut butter. I used to always buy Peter Pan because that's what mom bought. Now I use Jif, Peter Pan, Skippy. I tried the "fresh" deli made peanut butter from Publix but I didn't care for it. I guess I like additives.
Almost everything we eat has additives.
Gasoline has additives.
We still have pesticides on our fruit and veggies.
I guess we're all walking around with "additives" from preservatives etc, plus an unhealthy amount of plastic from our containers.
😱☠️
See, some folks run around saying additives are bad for you. Me, I've lived on the farm and seen fruit and vegetables without the benefit of insecticides and such. You're welcome to the worms, I'll take my chances with the spray. Besides, I'm bearing down so hard on turning 80, that it's squealing like a pig. My theory is the preservatives in products preserve you TOO!

Figs never tasted as good as the one's I use to filch off of old lady Watson's fig tree. She took all the fun out of it though, when she quit hollering at me to get away from her fig tree, and told me that I could take all of them I wanted.

Sometimes it knocks me out when a "store brand" just knocks me off my feet. Maybe 2'3rds of the name brands and it puts them to shame.
Yeah, we have chocolate chip cookies here from a store brand called "President's Choice" and they're outstanding.

I regularly buy store brand spices from a local Italian shop. Fair enough there are specialty places I could go but I haven't found a problem with what this place sells.

Generic and private label brands are much better now than decades ago and there has been a food retailing trend for more private label. Some brands and items mentioned here are made by really good regional food companies with their own labels that have a good following.

NDA (I'm in food business) prohibits saying more here but I find it entertaining when some of the same recipes and products are sold with different labels and have really strong reactions from the public. I've caught people liking an exact same product with private label but disliking the original not big brand and vice a versa.

Something I like in the trend is knowing quite a few of the firms making private and generic label products are to me better employers than a few giants who make food. It supports food plants that are more spread out and really important parts of the economy.
