I’ve mentioned them before, but Yamahas of that era were great players, but not really lookers. Immediately pre Super Strat craze, one of these was my first ‘good’ electric which I naturally traded for a Kramer single HB + whammy in 1985

Squier. My '83 P-Bass will rival any MIA from any era. The SQ series came out in '83, they tend to be more affordable than the previous JV series and they're just as good.

Ibanez. My '82 AM50 (many years later, Gibson eventually put something similar out, the 339) is probably one of the highest quality guitars I've ever owned. Ibanez's from that era w/ humbuckers have the real Super 58's. Low output Alnico 3 pickups that go for around $250-350 for a pair, when you can find them. They made these from 82-84 and run around $1K.

If you like full size 335 style, the Ibanez AS & Yamaha SA series were probably better than Gibson's from that year...and a lot more affordable.

if you're looking for 83 Fender, collectible and affordable.
'83 saw the introduction of the short lived Strat & Tele Elite models...

As mentioned, in this case effects may be a better route to take. Definitely a RAT. Maybe a Tube Screamer.

Also, in '83 BOSS came out with a couple of heavy-hitters: the HM-2 Heavy Metal and the DD-2 Digital Delay.

There honestly is not a guitar or amp from back then that I can say I would be interested in.

p.s. I take that back...someone posted above about the Fender Elite models. I had forgotten about those. Would definitely love one of each. I think every Strat should have that push-button switching. Any p'up combination is possible.

Should I be looking at old Ibanez guitars

Yes!

During my birth year guitar thing, I went with Ibanez (1984 here). Got a Roadstar that was awesome. Also went down that 80s Ibanez rabbit hole a bit and got an ‘82 Destroyer, an ‘81 Blazer and another Roadstar. All great guitars, the MIJ stuff from back then was really top notch.

I scored all those for between $250-400 in the last few years, expect to pay more now. I still miss the Destroyer. I’m eyeing one up now, it’s an ‘83 I believe, actually!
