Bought new from MF, came in with strings smashed almost completely through the nut, input jack went mia when I plugged my cord in first time and the body color just doesn't seem quite the way it should.

    Your thoughts would be appreciated.

    Return or keep and repair.

Neck is perfect except for heel fit.;)

Intonation is spot on with almost no adjustment.:)

    Has "9's" on it, and I don't play "9's" I probably should but I don't.

    Aggravated.

Here's a few pictures. I know no one can decide for me, but I would appreciate your thoughts.

Not bashing G&L either, most of my T-Styles are ASAT's.:)

Return it and buy a new one from Guitar Center. From what I know they are the same company so it should cost the same. At least then if there is an issue you could bring it to them in person to fix/rectify if needed.
Or buy from a reputable Mom & Pop store.

I would feel bad returning for the color, and the jack is an easy fix, but there’s no excuse for that nut. Return it.

No thoughts on the color but the rest of it means you should absolutely send it back. They shipped you a broken instrument.

Send it back. That nut needs replaced, and the giant gap between the neck and pocket is only going to drive YOU nuts!

EDIT: Not sure what color you were expecting, but that color works for me!

Needs new string nut and the Jack input nut.

If you got a good price on it, and the guitar is good, you might want to keep it. If you contact the selling store, they may even offer a small discount that may take care of the nut.

You should have no problem getting an exchange from MF. Poop happens sometimes.
I do actually like that color though - looks great on that guitar.

I can't tell the nut problem. Is it cracked?
Nut aside, the color looks ok to me but that pickguard color is absolutely terrible for a faux Torti.

I think you should play it some if you can, then decide whether to return it or not. If it has "the mojo" for you, those things are easily fixed. If not, return it!

I can’t tell what’s wrong with the nut either. Looks just like the ones on my ASATs. The nuts on my guitars appear to be slanted a bit from low to high and they were made in Fullerton. I love the color AND the color/pickguard combination.

Nice looking guitar IMO. Very keepable!

If you look at the 1st pic, you can see the low strings have been squashed into the nut, with some nut material pressed/squished out as a result.

Quite difficult to see, I had to look closely. It actually might still be good, but I expect the strings to be slighlty too low now and cause some fret rattle when playing open strings there.

I got a turquoise Bluesboy a few months ago and it's a metallic medium gray. I like it though so I didn't care.

Personally, I'd just fix it myself because the jack is no big deal and the nut is probably plastic and needs to be replaced anyways, but if you're not into fixing your own guitars I'd send it back.

And the rosewood neck goes really well with the overall color scheme.

If the neck appears to be straight and if it feels nice to your hands, I would definitely try to keep the guitar.

Sometimes it is easier to work through a set of smaller problems than it is to start from scratch again. Who’s paying the shipping costs back to the seller?

I just think you have a fine looking guitar right in front of you.

    Just my humble opinion.

I had a tribby Blues Boy. Could not get rid of it fast enough.Just a sloppy build. I’ve played many fantastic US G&L’s.

OP, you said that you have a few ASAT's already, so you know how they're supposed to be. If the nut is damaged, it's damaged, and that is on the seller, in this case Musicians Friend. If you do not want to do an exchange they might try to have you pay the shipping back (I know from prior experience), but if you can convince them that it is defective they sometimes cover the return shipping. If you're ever in PA, you might want to check out Northeast Music Center in Dickson City. I don't have any affiliation with them, it's just a great store, they sell G&L (it's where I got mine from and I'm always thinking of getting another), and the owner, Jack, is a wonderful luthier. Even when MF has them on sale, I'd rather get a G&L from Jack because I know that he'll take care of any issues with it.

OK well it has one of those soft terrible nuts on it then. A good tusq or bone nut will not "squish" but will break usually. So keep that in mind even if you send it back. Plan on putting a good nut on it.

Ask for a $150 refund to cover the cost of a trip to the tech, and if they won't give it to you, return it.
