The bass player I jam with is pretty great and I like to try and pick some songs that I know are fun for him to rip it up when we play. Some examples of songs that are fun for him are:

    Simple man by Skynyrd
    Hey Bulldog by the Beatles
    Ziggy Stardust by Bowie

I’m trying to think of a new song for us to learn. Anyone have some suggestions of other “fun” bass songs?

Apostrophe, by Frank Zappa / The Mothers of Invention.
One of the best bass solos ever.
    That would make him greater!

Rumor is that Jack Bruce played the bass on this track, although he never admitted it (Sounds like Jack).

King Of The Road by Roger Miller, Sittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay by Otis Redding, Eight Days A Week and I Saw Her Standing There by the Beatles, leap to mind.

Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick - Ian Dury & The Blockheads
Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll - Ian Dury & The Blockheads

The first is tricky, very tricky. The second is fun.

Crossroads - Cream ( live way of playing it )

Keep the basic structure and go nuts!

Guns Of Brixton - The Clash

A lot of Clash songs are actually fun to play. You could go all 'Beats International' in the middle for added giggles.

Any reggae/funk/ska lines ( well, pretty much )

    Smooth - Santana

    Cover Me - Springsteen..

a couple we do that I like playing on bass...

. you need songs where the bass really drives/controls the feel of the song to be fun.... not just following what a guitarist is doing...

get to practice.. lay down the bassline ,, this is how it goes lads, work your parts out around this... ;)

Have you asked the bass player what he'd like to play?

Hot Legs/Rid Stewart has a solo... Any jumpy Chicago blues shuffle with a walking bass line. That's the kind of stuff that turns me on when playing bass.

I always like the bass playing (TM Stevens) on the Pretender’s Don’t Get Me Wrong.
