I started playing for the first time last June and practiced daily very diligently till developing hand issues in late November. Over the last 3 months I have been practicing just 30 min/day on the average. Tests are in progress, so I should know something by mid-April. in the meantime...

I took my Boss Pocket GT, Sennheiser studio headphones, and 3 ft guitar cable, 1mm purples Earnie Ball pick, and went to Sam Ash and then Guitar Center to try PRS but ended up trying other things instead.

My guitar is a Player Plus Tele with the stacked humbuckers, which I think sounds great, can do it all, and is extremely comfortable to me.

Here are the settings and riffs:
1/ 5150 (not a great Boss sim): Aint Talking Bout Love, Jamie is Cryin', Little Dreamer, Atomic Punk, You Really Got me
2/ Mesa Boogie (I cannot do anything with the Pocket GT Marshall sim): Hold the Line, Rainbow in the Dark, Holy Diver, Highway to Hell
3/ A clean Twin with boost for various licks and a beginner blues solo
4/ An acoustic setting for U2's One.

And here are the guitars I tried and what I found for MY TASTES:

1/ Wolfgang Standard is too cheap. It is okay. But, nothing special, and a cheap FR to boot. Cheap versions of specialty guitars should not exist IMO.
2/ Ibanez RG for 600 or so looks like crap but plays great and sounds excellent. I liked the 16" radius. Very distinctive pickups. It is essentially a cheap Jem without the extras.
3/ Epiphone LP that is 650$: sounded excellent and looked excellent. The idea to have heavy lacquer is nuts but aside for the need to sell it along with 1 ton of sandpaper it seems an absolute steal for 650.
4/ Affinity Strat is a nice cheapo guitar and the single coils KILL it on cleaner tones. I did not run the full gamut on this one.

And then it became even more interesting:

5/ JEM7VP: I could not put this thing away. Blew everything and anything out of the water on every setting, every riff or cord progression I tried. From high gain to single coil, this was phenomenal. The 16" radius as with the cheaper RG I liked a lot. I don't care for the pretentious looks but this guitar is a dream.

6/ Gibson Les Paul Standard &
7/ Gibson Les Paul the Guitar Center version.

After the JEM, the two Gibson Les Pauls were completely uncompetitive and I really did not like the GC version. They did the Dio/AC-DC stuff really well of course but that was about it. As a beginner, I did not think the actual Les Pauls were any better than the Epiphone and I would rather take sandpaper to the latter :) I understand that you are supposed to fish for the magical LP that sings to you but honestly that is just a way to perpetuate a myth. I certainly liked the standard LP over the GC version though I cannot necessarily explain why.

So what then? Well, it depends. I am now doing everything in Eb and I will go back to 10-38 Hendrix strings from the current 9-42. That should be good enough for my hands no matter what happens. And so I would be able to add a Jem (not a PIA, too much extra money for minor differences and MiJ label) or a Wolfgang Special (not paying 4,000+ for a US model) down the road. I need to try a Wolfgang Special but the JEM really set the bar sky high.

If I have to have a short scale, especially if I still want to do standard tuning, then I will take a hard look at the new PRS SE McCarthy and at the Epiphone Les Paul range.

Just my 2c, remember that I am a beginner and me holding a Steve Vai designed guitar is a like a pig driving a Ferrari.

I agree completely. I am fortunate to have several of Mr. Vai’s signature guitars and I love ‘em. It’s hard to beat an MIJ Ibanez for playability and sound

I've been watching an Affinity Strat on Sweetwater for several weeks. Its a STEAL at $249, the one in white with a maple neck is one of the best looking guitars I've ever seen. If I didn't already have 4 great Strats, I would have already ordered one. I know I could add better pickups and pots and have a keeper.

You started playing in June, and you're playing Van Halen, and those other songs. And you have quite a bit of knowledge about guitars, ect. It doesn't sound like you're a beginner.

Thanks but I am. With hand issues I pushed through Level 5 of the Justin Guitar theory course but I am still just a beginner overall. The only full songs I can play--and without solos--are Enter Sandman and Aint Talking Bout Love. I am consistent on the Enter Sandman, not so much on VH at full speed. Hold The Line I do the main riff and the verse and similar with Highway to Hell. The rest is just the opening riffs.

I am also playing Van Halen unplugged and slowly to get consistently precise notes as that really exposes any finger "malfunctions" LOL.

But I am surely loving the whole experience; I should have started when my career first allowed an opening in 2015 but as my name here says, better late than never!

Cheers and have a great week!

Per the rules of this sight you are not allowed to say anything nice about Guitar Center. Whether or not, like me, you have not had a bad experience there and occasionally go just to look around. The anti’s will be jumping all over you soon. Glad you enjoyed yourself.

And today, I went to the other nearby GC :)

I had tried guitars acoustically to check for playability but was plugged in this time around, as I was last week.

CV Strat, Epi SG, Epi LP (again), and Sterling Axis.

I thought the CV Strat was an absolute bargain. Sounded good, played great, nice neck.
I thought the SG sounded good and Highway to Hell was fun; and it was light of course.
The EPi LP, again, I thought was a bargain.

But the Sterling Axis, nah. As with the Wolfgang Standard, it felt cheap. Sounded fine but not "it". Was more playable than a Gibson/Epiphone, but the neck felt cheap and it was also a bit chunky IMO. Just don't make specialty guitars at this price point!

So greatest revelations so far, though not surprising cause it is hardly news:
Epi can make some very good Gibsons and Classic Vibe, at least if it is a good one, are really good. Felt better than a Player series Strat honestly though I cannot compare the sound. I do mean Player and not Player Plus. I think the Player Plus necks are a whole level up from Player series.

The Classic Vibe Strats are really good! I have a Player Strat and I love neck on mine...play another example if you're still curious about them.

Don't make this more complicated than it is. You don't need a certain guitar to play a certain artist's songs or style. Buy the guitar that feels good to you. We are living in a golden age for production guitars. When I was a kid, many many years ago, one had to spend a certain amount of money to get a playable guitar. These days, many budget guitars are perfectly serviceable. So buy the guitar that feels best to you. You will be able to play all the songs you mentioned on it, and then some. It doesn't end there. You will buy a second and a third guitar in due time, and probably a whole lot more.

Thanks, but I am not choosing a guitar, I am just trying various guitars for the heck of it: inquisitive minds need to know and ears need to hear :). I won't own more than two; I am just not that kind of person. I collect nothing and I sell or throw away anything I don't need. I already have put for sale both of my amps and the starter guitar I originally got; finally sold the Orange Crush. They are not bad at all, just not what I want long term. I also got a multi-purpose Behringer pedal to see what that is like and I will trade that for a Sam Ash 15% discount on something when the time comes.

It certainly is a lot of fun trying out different guitars, amps and effects. You have more willpower than I do!

One major thing I learned about myself: I like Alnico 2 and 5 magnets, but I LOVE quality ceramic magnets. Now I also understand why I so much prefer, for example, the tone of Steve Vai or John 5 over Joe Satriani who uses Alnico 5. But to test my newly formulated hypothesis I also need to hear the Jem ALnico 5 version which is the one commonly sold by Sam Ash and Guitar Center. Let the hunt begin 😃

If you are in Phoenix, you have a lot more choices than Sam Ash & Guitar center.
