I have some NOS metal jacket 6L6s. Can these be used in guitar amps at all? I tried a pair in my Fender Blues DeVille (4x10 model) and they got super hot and it smelled like something was burning. Took these tubes out and put the glass tubes back in (Svetlana 6L6s). No super hot tubes or burning smell. Interestingly, the metal tubes made the DeVille sound even louder than usual. Is this par for the course with metal tubes? Should I use them at all or are they for use in audio equipment or military equipment only?

    Hmmmmm

I forget where I read this....but I don't think you can use them.

I must be getting too old and forgetting things!

Those old 6L6's had a dissipation of around 11 - 14W. They were probably red under that metal![/b]

    yep

As I recall they'll only handle 350 volts or so on the plates.

Suitable for vintage radio applications, but not guitar amps.

They are suitable in older (50's & some 60's) amps that call for a 6L6WGB or earlier versions of the tube. Quite nice sounding actually, but not suitable in applications calling for a 6L6GC.
